Three botany faculty members also participate in the interdepartmental Ph.D. program in Molecular and Cellular Life Sciences (MCLS). Students apply directly to the MCLS program, rather than to the Department of Botany. First year students rotate through four laboratories before choosing a mentor for their degree. Prospective students are encouraged to contact individual Botany faculty (Buerkle, Ward, and Weinig) and to review information about the program, including application procedures. Breadth of Learning UW’s new MCLS program is a perfect opportunity for students to customize their program to meet their own professional needs and interests. This interdisciplinary program spans a wide range of research topics, such as: Biotechnology, bioengineering, biomaterials, and pharmacology Cell biology and signaling Genetics and development Genomics, proteomics, and computational biology Microbiology and infectious disease Structural biology and biophysics

Applicants must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or recognized school is required. A cumulative minimum GPA of 3.0 on previous coursework is required for full admission (3.25 for interdisciplinary program applicants). Other English Language Requirement: A minimum score of 540 on the written TOEFL exam.
