This course is aimed at those nurses who wish to further their knowledge within the context of General Practice. Students will have opportunity to undertake a variety of modules according to need and/or interest. This is a unique and flexible approach to learning, as the student can chose from catalogue of modules focusing on practice nursing skills such as  long term conditions, acute management of patients, treatment room skills, leadership skills and non-medical prescribing.The rationale for this course is based around the national agenda identified in The Five Year Forward (NHS England, 2014) and the implementation of the General Practice Nursing Standards (Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) & the Royal College of Nursing (RCN), 2015). Furthermore,  a key benefit of the  programme is that they will align to District Nursing and General Practice Nursing: Education and Career Framework (Health Education England, 2015).

Admission Requirements

  • Have a first degree (2:2 class or above) or equivalent, in a relevant subject (i.e. health related, pure science or social science) from an approved institution of higher education. If you do not meet these criteria you are advised to contact the course leader for advice. Transfer of credits in accordance with University regulations may be possible.
  • Be working in a general practice environment that will enable them to meet and achieve the course learning outcomes.
  • Be able to provide two references (one practice/work and one academic).
  • Be able to satisfy the Course Leader that you are suitable to engage with the programme.
  • Informal enquiries are welcomed. Your application will be considered on its merits and in the light of the nature and scope of the programme. You may be invited for an informal discussion before being offered a place. The purpose of this discussion is first to ensure that you understand the nature of the programme and its demands and to pathway plan your modular route leading to the identified award and exit point.
  • If you do not meet the above criteria you may still be considered for admission to the programme; you will be required to provide evidence of suitable experience and supportive qualifications.
  • Have the ability to be self-funding or have the commitment of their employer to support course fees.
  • Have their manager’s support for the course (where appropriate).
