This course has been developed by 4 European universities in partnership with 16 major international companies/organisations to respond to key challenges facing the energy sector, which are: the development of new energy sources and understanding their implications on power systems; identifying methods to reduce CO2 emissions by increasing energy efficiency and using cleaner energy sources. 1 solution explored on this course is the development of electric and hybrid electric vehicles to help reduce CO2 emissions and lessen our reliance on fossil fuels. The course also looks at electrical power systems, energy efficiency and renewable energy, and has a strong focus on innovation and sustainability issues. Students investigate: the management of generation technologies, particularly renewable energy sources; grid connection interfaces including electronic power converters; transport and distribution systems, including smart grids and micro-grid concept; the impact of electrical transportation systems (EV/HEV) on the electrical network; power electronics applications for EV/HEV.
