Novosibirsk for students

The unofficial capital of Siberia and considered Russia’s scientific center, Novosibirsk is Russia’s third-largest city by population, with around 1.6 million residents.

Founded in 1893, it’s one of the country’s fastest-growing cities and is the cultural and economic heart of Siberia, as well as a transport hub for the region.

Novosibirsk is home to one of Russia’s most respected universities, Novosibirsk State University, which is located in the world-famous research center, Akademgorodok (‘Academic Town’). 

In the survey used to compile the QS Best Student Cities ranking, one respondent shared what it’s like in Akademgorodok: “The atmosphere there is unique and amazing, probably the main reason for that is a huge amount of science centers and institutes, the university itself and, of course, the people.”

With relatively low living costs and tuition fees, Novosibirsk appears in the top 10 for affordability in the Best Student Cities 2019, ranking fourth in the world.

Aside from the relatively low annual tuition fee costs (averaging at around US$2,600), students benefit from Novosibirsk’s extremely low standard of living.

Numbeo estimates a single person living in Novosibirsk will need around US$345 per month in addition to US$320 for rent. This is significantly lower than the majority of student cities and can account for the city’s exceptionally high score for affordability this year.

Life and Culture in Novosibirsk

Looking around the city, you’ll spot fine Tsar-era buildings and wooden-lace architecture similar to that found in nearby Tomsk.

If you fancy soaking up some culture, the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre is just one among many popular venues.

For scientists, there’s Novosibirsk Zoo – a world-renowned scientific institute as well as a tourist attraction. Or if you’re into something a bit more macabre, the unique Museum of World Funeral Culture might be of interest.

If you’re looking for a day trip, the Altai region is just outside of the city and is home to some of Russia’s beautiful greenery, making it a perfect place to unwind.

As the third-largest city in Russia and the economic heart of Siberia, Novosibirsk has plenty of employment opportunities for graduates looking for work. In fact, the city ranks an impressive 78th in the world for the employer activity indicator.

Novosibirsk is home to the headquarters of numerous Russian corporations as well as hosting many international firms including Nestle, Intel and Excelsior LLC. The city is often called Russia’s industrial capital and firms are often on the lookout for highly skilled graduates.
