  • Tsinghua University is the best university in China this year to study computer science.

The recently released QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021 features 651 of the best universities to study computer science in the world – with 35 of these located in Mainland China.  

The QS World University Rankings by Subject are based on four indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper and the H-index (a way of measuring the productivity and published work of a scientist or scholar). You can find more details about the methodology behind the subject rankings here

Starting off our countdown of the best Chinese universities to study computer science is Wuhan university in 151-200 worldwide, earning a high score in the H-index indicator. 

Amongst the university’s esteemed computer science alumni is Liu Jingan, founder of Xiaomi, one of Mainland China’s largest technology companies.  

=10. Sun Yat-sen University

Also ranking at 151-200 for its computer science course is Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, achieving a notably high score in the H-index indicator. 

The School of Data and Computer Science (SCDS) at the university is home to three national labs: The Digital Home Engineering Research Center, the Digital Home Interactive Application Lab and the Chips and Systems Lab for Internet of Things. The programme teaches mathematics, programming and the theory and application of computer software and hardware.

Another Chinese university ranked 151-200 globally is Harbin Institute of Technology in Harbin. The university achieves the third highest score in Mainland China for the H-index ranking indicator, with a score of 92.1 out of 100. 

The school of computer science and technology at Harbin was founded in 1956. Since then, the school has formed more than twenty research fields in the discipline of computer application technology and computer architecture.

The last Chinese university to be ranked 151-200 for its computer science course is Beijing Institute of Technology. The school earns a high score in the H-index indicator. 

Beijing Institute of Technology's computer science programme was established in 1958 and offered one of the first computer science programmes in Mainland China. Throughout the course, sstudents gain a deep understanding of both fundamentals and important current issues in computer science and computer engineering. 

9. Xi’an Jiaotong University

Ranking joint 148th globally, Xi’an Jiaotong University climbs up to 52 positions in the rankings this year. The school ranks ninth in Mainland China in 2021, scoring particularly well in the research citations per paper and the H-index indicators.  

The course combines elements of electrical and electronic engineering with  computer science to give students a competitive edge in the graduate job market. Graduates from the computer science school at Xi’an Jiaotong University have gone on to be employed by companies including IBM, Microsoft, Baidu, Tencent, Ali and Huawei, amongst others.  

8. Huazhong University of Science and Technology

Eighth in Mainland China and 139th globally is Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in Wuhan. 

Computer science students at HUST can participate in several international events including the Microsoft Imagine Cup, ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest, and the International Supercomputing Conference. 

 7.  Nanjing University

Ranked 101st worldwide and seventh in Mainland China for computer science in 2021 is Nanjing University. The program scores highly in the research citations per paper and the H-index ranking indicators. 

Nanjing University’s department of computer science and technology was founded in 1958 and conferred the first doctoral degree in Computer Software in Mainland China.  

6. University of Science and Technology of China

The University of Science and Technology of China is the sixth best Chinese university to study computer science, achieving a particularly high score for the H-index ranking indicator. 

Undergraduate computer science programs at the University of Science and Technology of China take four years to complete. The first two years focus on fundamental theories and basic knowledge, with students choosing subjects according to their interests for the final two years. 

5. Zhejiang University

Zhejiang University is ranked joint 47th in the world and fifth in Mainland China for computer science. The university scores highly across most indicators, particularly employer reputation and research citations per paper. 

The university is in the city of Hangzhou, home to the Hangzhou Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone (HHTZ). The HHTZ positions itself as the Silicon Valley of Mainland China and is home to the headquarters of the Alibaba Group, Mainland China's largest website in terms of market value.  

4. Fudan University

Shanghai’s Fudan University takes fourth place in Mainland China for computer science, ranked joint 44th worldwide. Research into computer science at the school responds to national and societal needs, focusing on theoretical and application innovation. 

The university scores highly across most of the indicators, earning one of the highest scores in Mainland China for employer reputation. Fudan University has many notable alumni in the field of technology, including president of the online services group at Microsoft, Qi Lu, and president of the Alibaba Group, Jianhang Jin.  

3. Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Ranking 29th in the world for computer science is Shanghai Jiao Tong University, climbing five places in the index this year. Shanghai Jiao Tong University ranks third in Mainland China and achieves a near perfect score in the H-index ranking indicator. 

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the university has five core research areas: computer science theory, parallel and distributed computing, intelligence and human computer interaction, cryptography and information security and computer applications. 

2. Peking University 


Second in Mainland China and 20th in the world is Peking University, located the Chinese capital, Beijing. The university scores highly across all ranking indicators, particularly the H-index and employer reputation indicators 

The School of Electronics Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) is the largest department at Peking University, with 12 research institutes and around 390 faculty members.

Tsinghua University takes the top spot in Mainland China for computer science, ranking 13th globally. It achieves some of the highest scores in the country across all ranking indicators, with a particularly high score of 99.5 out of 100 in the H-index.  

Students at Tsinghua’s computer science school get the chance to participate in the Tsinghua Artificial Intelligence Programming Contest, where they develop Artificial Intelligence programs for gaming.
