Rising above them are the UK’s two most historic institutions, the University of Cambridge (up one place to first) and the University of Oxford (up three places to second).

Only two universities in this year’s top 20 are based in countries which aren’t English-speaking. The University of Amsterdam is a non-mover in 14th place, while the University of Copenhagen has dropped one place to 17th.
