BA Classical Studies and English Literature

This multi-disciplinary course will provide you with knowledge of a variety of different kinds of English texts and classical literature, art, philosophy and their reception in modern culture, as well as perspectives on different methods of critical analysis. Whether or not you have already had the opportunity to study the ancient world, we welcome you to explore the history, literature, art and culture of ancient societies which are fascinating in their own right and have done much to shape our own. Reading’s Department of Classics offers stimulating and challenging courses for students with different interests and backgrounds. This is a multi-disciplinary course which aims to provide you with subject-specific knowledge and more general skills, including knowledge of a variety of different kinds of English texts and classical literature, art, philosophy and their reception in modern culture, as well as perspectives on different methods of critical analysis. The course also aims to foster an independent approach to formulating problems and arguments, using the close reading and analytical skills that are fundamental to both disciplines. There is provision for the development of your specific interests through independent study for the dissertation. After the course As well as the practical experience gained on this degree our students also graduate with a range of transferable skills, such as self-motivation, time management and strategic thinking. You will enter the job market as a self-confident graduate with well-developed skills in oral communication, research and writing, together with a high level of cultural literacy and critical sophistication. Many of our graduates develop successful careers as artists, writers and curators. These include a number of famous alumni, such as Turner-prize nominated artists, and PhD students who are award-winning artists and curators at influential museums. Others have found employment in galleries, education, art therapy and film and video production.
