BA English Literature and German

This four-year course lets you combine the study of English literature with the study of German language and literature to reveal the deep cultural connections between Europe’s leading nations. Why study this course? This four-year degree is taught by members of the School of Literature and Languages, which includes the Department of English Literature and the Department of Modern Languages and European Studies. By studying English Literature and German together, you will discover the extensive cultural links between the two literatures, languages and cultures. You will reach a high level of competence in reading, writing and speaking German, through modules designed to advance your language skills, from beginner’s level to advance German. Language skills are highly valued in today’s job market. In Tthe School of Literature and Languages, our teaching is based on small-group seminar discussion, and all members of the departments, from professors to new lecturers, teach at every level. We are is a very research-active School and we continue to extend our curriculum, so that you encounter the best of what is being written now as well as the best writing from the past. You will spend a year abroad as part of your degree course, and so you will have the opportunity to take courses in one of our partner universities on the Erasmus exchange programme, or do a teaching assistantship or work placement. There is a strong sense of community in the School of Languages and Literature: if you decide to study for your degree with us, we hope you will be part of that community during and after your degree. As a Reading graduate you will enter the job market with well-developed skills of oral communication, research and writing, together with a high level of cultural literacy and critical sophistication. This is an attractive profile: Reading graduates in English Literature have taken up jobs in television, film, theatre, publishing, public relations and advertising, journalism, education (primary, secondary and tertiary), travel and tourism, events planning, retail management and a variety of communication fields. Many of our graduates go on to put their linguistic skills to practical use by working for companies with a German connection and job prospects extend well beyond translating, teaching and interpreting. Recent graduates have gone on to roles such as Customer Services Team Member in Germany (Kimberley Clark), Publishing Editor (Taylor & Francis Group), Account Executive (JP Morgan), German Client Services (Swets) and Clerical Officer (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council). ).
