A combined degree that will appeal to those looking to develop a high level of proficiency in a second language in addition to a firm grounding in history, a combination sought after by many employers. A year in a Spanish-speaking country is included, providing the opportunity to experience Hispanic life and culture whilst furthering your studies. Why study this course? Spain and the countries of Latin America together form a key economic and political presence on the international scene and are known for their extraordinary cultural diversity and fascinating history. By studying both subjects in a joint honours degree, you will discover the extensive cultural and historical links, between English and the Spanish speaking countries, as well as looking more broadly at the Hispanic culture and the large number of countries across the globe where Spanish is spoken. At each stage of the degree, you will take core language modules, specifically designed to develop your written and spoken linguistic skills; by the end of your studies, you can expect to be able to write and speak fluently in Spanish. As the influence of Spain and Spanish speaking countries grows, this degree will allow students to be at the forefront of developments in this area. After the course Reading History graduates come away with a broad set of transferable skills developed over the course of their studies, which are highly valued by a wide range of employers. You will be enabled to think clearly and critically, to express yourself with confidence, both orally and in writing, and to work effectively both as an individual and within teams. Graduates have pursued careers in all areas of the private and public sectors, including journalism, publishing, TV production, web design, accountancy, law, banking and management. Most recently, Reading History graduates have been employed by the Ministry of Defence, Barclays, the Ministry of Justice, Red magazine, the Armed Forces, universities, schools, local authorities and the NHS. Some have gone on to find work further afield in Europe, Japan and the USA. Many of our graduates also demonstrate their love of History as a subject by teaching it at all levels of the curriculum from primary to university level. Well-qualified graduate linguists in the UK are in a strong position to find employment, and your experience of studying or working abroad will assure your future employers that you are self-reliant, adaptable and enterprising.
