Physics and mathematics are corner stones of our modern knowledge-based society. This has to do with the structural power of abstraction and mathematical algorithms as well as the far-reaching consequences of logical induction. In connection with the processes of modelling and analyzing in natural sciences and technology, they account for the fact that mathematics and theoretical physics are important foundation pillars and central innovative factors of our civilization. The elite program offers students both an in-depth and broad education in theoretical and mathematical physics. The focus for physics students, on the one hand, is on the use of mathematical methods, while, on the other hand, mathematicians are being guided in modern physics questions. The two year master course is jointly run by the physics and mathematics departments of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) and Technische Universität München (TUM).

More programs from the university

You can add a master's degree to your first undergraduate degree (e.g. bachelor's degree or State Examination) if you want to expand or specialize your knowledge.  An increasing number are now in English — from American History to Physics. A master's degree program at LMU usually takes two years and is made up of 120 ECTS points.

In addition to an undergraduate degree, further qualification requirements may be necessary, which are detailed in the examination regulations for each master's degree.
There are consecutive master's degree programs that build on knowledge from undergraduate studies in the same subject. In other master's degree programs, the requirements can be met with different academic degrees, because they require certain fundamentals that are not restricted to a single subject area. Weiterbildende Master (career-integrated master's degree programs) also require relevant professional experience. Students in these programs are usually required to pay additional tuition fees.

You can find information on individual degree programs in the LMU Degree Program Finder.
