Charles Sturt takes a holistic approach to understand each applicants' potential for academic success. Each student is assessed on a range of factors including academic readiness, previous study, work and life experience, motivation to succeed, and an awareness of the demands of tertiary study.

Applicants for the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) must meet the following admission requirements. A completed Bachelor's degree (or AQF equivalent) and successful completion of acceptable undergraduate and/or post graduate study that includes the equivalent of three-quarters of a year (0.75 Equivalent Full Time Study Load - EFTSL) of discipline study, usually comprising sequential study taken over three years.  In most programs, this equates to six units, with no more than two units at first year level and no fewer units than two units at third year level.

Upon admission students who meet the entry requirements in full are awarded 64 points of entry-level credit in recognition of prior completed relevant undergraduate and/or postgraduate study.

The credit packages which are awarded upon entry to the course are based on the extent to which the applicant's previous academic undergraduate and/or postgraduate study fits with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) requirements for secondary teaching areas. Students who do not meet the minimum NESA requirements will receive proportionally less credit - based on the number of additional subjects required to meet accreditation.
This credit is represented on academic transcripts as:

  • EDU42C Entry Level Discipline Credit - 64 subject points (indicating no additional study is required to support their teaching area)

If students require additional discipline subjects (maximum of two) to meet NESA accreditation requirements then the following credit package will apply:

  • EDU40C Entry Level Discipline Credit - 56 credit points (indicating 1 further discipline content subject is required to support teaching area)
  • EDU39C Entry Level Discipline Credit - 48 subject points(indicating 2 further discipline content subjects are required to support teaching area)

Students may be granted up to a maximum of eight subjects of credit from the set of sixteen core Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) subjects based upon additional graduate entry studies.

English Language Proficiency Entry Requirements for Teacher Education Preparation Programs
All applicants who do not meet the Standard CSU English Language Proficiency Requirements must demonstrate proficiency by completing an Academic IELTS (or equivalent) with an overall score of 7.5 (with no score below 7 in reading and writing, and a score of no less than 8 in speaking and listening) - see CSU Concordance Tables for accepted equivalent measures.

NOTE: Please refer to relevant National or State employing bodies for their English language proficiency requirements when seeking employment.

 

This is a graduate-entry degree. For entry into this course you must hold a prior bachelor’s degree as determined by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), previously the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES). Entry requirements are based on the NESA accreditation requirements for entry to teacher education courses. You are required to have six appropriate discipline subjects from your completed undergraduate degree as the basis of the curriculum method major.  You can find an overview of these requirements on the NESA website.

You must upload a verified copy of the transcript and award for your completed undergraduate degree with your application.

Content requirements

Your undergraduate (or any postgraduate) degree/s must contain a major in the first subject you intend to teach and a minor in any additional subjects you would like to teach. A major is defined as six sequential semester-long units of undergraduate study. At least four of these units must be at level 2 (year 2) or above. A minor is defined as four semester-long units of undergraduate study. At least two of these units must be at level 2 (year 2) or above.

Charles Sturt University will assess to what extent the studies in your undergraduate degree meet the NESA content requirements for teaching particular secondary school subjects. NESA does not provide this assessment.

You should note that some secondary school subjects have very specific requirements. For example, to be a science teacher you need to have studied chemistry or physics at university level, and to be a PDHPE teacher you need to have studied both practical sports and contemporary adolescent health issues at university level.

Charles Sturt University Admissions staff will assess applications according to the New South Wales guidelines. If you have a previous written prescription from NESA or the relevant employing authority in another state, it is requested that you include a copy with your application.

You may be considered for entry if you have completed four out of the six necessary discipline subjects. In this case, if you're successful in gaining entry into the course then you will be expected to study the remaining two undergraduate discipline subjects concurrently with the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary).

If you have more than two undergraduate level subjects to complete your application will be deemed ineligible. We encourage you to complete the necessary undergraduate requirements and then reapply.

If, in Charles Sturt University’s opinion, you have met the NESA requirements, you will be eligible for consideration for the course. Entry is then based on competitiveness of applicants.

Academic qualifications will be considered in the light of level of achievement in a relevant undergraduate degree and any subsequent postgraduate qualifications.

Internet access

You are required to have internet access in order to meet course requirements and are expected to present work in a professional manner using computer-based technologies. The Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) is supported by a course forum and subject forums (all web based), and there is an expectation that you will study this course completely online.

Literacy requirement

You are required to sit the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) before your final placement. If you do not have the required level of competence in spoken and written English, you will be required to independently organise some form of coaching in English literacy, such as a short TAFE course or other form of tuition to improve your skills. You will be advised of your options by the head of school from the campus where you are enrolled.

If, after an agreed period of study in English literacy, your English literacy standard has not improved, the appropriate head of school will provide further advice with regard to alternative career options.
