Although technology has revolutionized the ways in which we share and consume the news, the principles and values that govern journalism remain the same. At Emerson’s Department of Journalism, you’ll learn how to tell stories that increase public understanding and awareness, and gain the skills necessary to adapt to-and shape-this rapidly evolving field. Combining tradition and innovation, the Department of Journalism is committed to training ethical journalists who can write compelling, original news stories-and bring those stories to life through broadcast, print, web, and multimedia platforms. As a student, you’ll gain rich experience in the field through class assignments, internships, and extracurricular activities that range from conducting on-street interviews and attending State House press conferences to providing multimedia coverage of the Emmys. Emerson’s Department of Journalism has adopted a dynamic new curriculum for students entering in Fall 2011 or later, and students from earlier classes who “opt in.” The courses emphasize a convergent, multimedia approach to storytelling and news reporting. Students will learn to report and produce news using words, audio, video, and web. Degree Requirements for Bachelor of Science in Journalism Students pursuing a major in Journalism must complete 44 credits in the major, including at least three courses at the 300 or 400 level. In addition, all students are required to complete PL 225, U.S. Government and Politics, which may be used to satisfy the Historical Perspective of the General Education requirements.
