This Master's program conceptualizes Gerontology as a scientific discipline dedicated to the study of aging, old age and the elderly from a biological, psychological and social approach, and from an inter, multi and transdisciplinary perspective.

Currently, the aging process of the population and the associated epidemiological transition pose challenges that must be faced by professionals from various areas of knowledge, capable of improving the quality of life and promoting the well-being of people as they age, as well as that of their families, the community and society, through education and application of knowledge under the approach and perspective offered by the Master's in Gerontology.

In our context, the imminent population aging presents us with challenges and opportunities in the economic, political, social and cultural aspects; that have repercussions on individuals and impact health, education, employment, in the social, family and community environment, likewise, it has an impact on both urban and rural infrastructure, security and social development; all this framed in a context mostly of poverty, marginalization, inequality and inequity. In this scenario, the functions of gerontology have been translated into transcendental and basic actions in all areas of the health sector, social assistance, public policies, economy, human development, education and culture in our country.

The Master's in Gerontology has its antecedent in the University of Guadalajara since 1994 and more recently in 2014 the collaboration of the public universities of the Center-West Region (RCO) of the ANUIES is added to present the creation of the Master's degree, with orientation towards the exercise of the profession in the social sectors, which aims for the graduate to achieve full mastery of their area and deepen in an innovative way in the specialized field to:
a) The promotion and encouragement of a healthy lifestyle for active and healthy ageing;
b) Prevention of damage to health throughout the life cycle;
c) Understand and meet the needs of the aging population in terms of their problems and potential, in order to contribute to a better quality of life and social welfare.
d) The study of intergenerational processes and family;
e) The implementation of gerontological intervention strategies;
f) The guarantee of quality and accessibility to gerontological health and social assistance services, and
g) The implementation of change strategies in social security and public policies.
