How fast is the coronavirus spreading and how can we slow it down? What makes people sick? Certain genes? Certain behavior? Other determinants? How do we best diagnose diseases? What are the prognosis of a disease? What improves or worsens the prognosis? How effective are interventions in daily practice? As an epidemiologist you learn to formulate an answer to these questions. Epidemiology is the discipline which studies the occurrence of health related events and conditions in populations. It focuses on the factors influencing the infection and on the way diseases spread. As a result, epidemiology is closely related to the field of public health. Epidemiologists have become indispensable in: - the design, performance and analysis of applied medical scientific research - the application of medical scientific knowledge in the development of public health policy The University of Antwerp’s Master of Epidemiology is unique in Flanders.

If you have an additional Master's degree, you are eligible to apply.A degree in Medicine, (Biomedical) Sciences or Public Health gives you a good base for the Master of Epidemiology. However, if you have another academic background and feel that you would benefit from more knowledge in epidemiology, statistics and research methods to strengthen your research, you might be the right candidate as well.
Students who are still completing their Bachelor’s degree are also encouraged to apply. They have to submit an official letter in English from their university confirming that they are expected to finalise their Bachelor’s studies at the end of the current academic year. They should also submit up-to-date authenticated transcripts with their results of the previous years.
All international students have to go through the online application procedure. As a first step, the Admission Board will review your grades, your background in medicine, epidemiology and statistics, and your motivation.
Language proficiency
The programme is taught in English. Candidates are therefore required to demonstrate their English language proficiency.
If your degree was not issued by a recognised educational institution in Belgium or the Netherlands, you will have to provide evidence of your level of English.
You can do this in two ways:
- By submitting proof that you have studied at least one academic year (or 60 ECTS credits) in an English-language Bachelor's or Master's programme. The Admission Board may require additional proof of your command of English.
- By submitting your results on a language test, with the following minimum scores:
- Paper-based TOEFL: minimum 550
- Internet-based TOEFL: minimum 80
- Computer-based TOEFL: minimum 213
- IELTS: minimum overall score of 6.5 and minimum score of 6.0 for each individual component
- Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR): minimum B2
Results obtained on other language tests will not be accepted.Tuition fee and scholarships
