Planning to study in Sydney? Good choice! The largest city in Australia, Sydney is the country’s financial hub and is home to the regional headquarters of around 500 multinational companies – so whatever your career plans, and wherever you come from, you are likely to find people from your country who have made their home ‘down under’.
Of course, important as it is to study hard and prepare for your future career, it’s also important to balance work and play. And if you’re going to study in Sydney, it would be rude not to make the most of the city’s attractions!
Australia’s relaxed lifestyle, vast open spaces, diverse landscapes, and seemingly endless new things to discover are just some of the reasons why Sydney was ranked the planet’s 4th best student city in 2016, and the 7th most liveable city in the world.
But don’t take just anyone’s word for it – find out for yourself! Here are 10 things you absolutely must experience when you study in Sydney:
1. Spend your afternoons at the beach
No other city in the world offers so many pristine beaches, so close to the city.
2. Swim in ocean pools
Sydney’s 100-plus ocean pools have been cooling hot Sydneysiders for more than a century. Each one is unique: from natural depressions enclosed by rings of rocks to deep pools hewn out of inter-tidal rock platforms, but they have one thing in common: their spectacular location.
3. Enjoy a picnic with a view
With thousands of parks, beaches, headlands, rivers, waterfalls and natural bushland areas, there is always somewhere spectacular to enjoy a picnic.
4. Discover cheap eats around hipster Newtown
With a thriving nightlife and café culture, there is always something new to try in the inner-city village of Newtown.
5. Attend festivals all year round
From the dazzling New Year’s Eve fireworks on Sydney Harbour to the month-long Sydney Festival and Vivid’s dazzling late autumn light show, there’s a year-round calendar of events to engage, excite and inspire.
6. Take a hike
From the windswept beauty of the cliff walk in the Royal National Park (one of the world’s first national parks) to the 250-kilometer Great North Walk, and hikes through World Heritage forests, if walking is your passion, then there is always a new trail to explore.
7. Be a sport
In sports-mad Australia, there are always major sporting events underway. From four codes of football to cricket, tennis, swimming and every other game under the sun, you’re sure to find something to watch. And if you would rather be a part of the game, then why not join a team? Universities offer a wide variety of individual or team sports for you to join, or you can become a member of one of hundreds of local sporting clubs.
8. Get wet
Sydney’s great climate means you can enjoy the water most of the year. Why not do what the locals do and explore the underwater world by snorkeling in some of the city’s pristine marine reserves or surfing at one of Sydney’s world-famous ocean beaches?
9. Watch some fireworks
Study in Sydney and you’ll find there’s always something to celebrate, with regular fireworks displays during the summer months in Darling Harbour, as well as displays across the city to celebrate Chinese New Year, Australia Day, Christmas Eve and, of course, New Year’s Eve.
10. Take in a movie under the stars
Outdoor movies are another regular feature of the Sydney summer, with events held across the city. All you need is a blanket and a picnic!
Make the most of Sydney when you study at Macquarie
