With headquarters in the city of Tuxtla Gutierrez, capital of Chiapas, Mexico, the university has 21,827 students and 1,173 academic faculty staff.
Aside from Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the Universidad Autónoma de Chiapas (UNACH) also has centers in Arriaga, Comitán, Pichucalco, San Cristóbal de las Casa, Palenque, Copainalá, Tapachula and Villaflores.
Created in 1974 by decree, the university began educational activities in 1975, by then governor Dr. Manuel Velasco Suárez. Soon after its founding, several higher education institutes united including the School of Engineering; Medicine and the Law School, with several degrees incorporated also.
With many degrees focused on engineering – agricultural engineering in environmental livestock; engineering in agroindustrial processes; forest systems engineering; forestry engineering – there are also other specialized degrees in coffee; veterinary medicine and zootechnics; bachelor of veterinary medicine and animal husbandry.
Postgrad offers include: Doctorate in regional studies; masters in history; master of education and agricultural sciences, specializing in palm oil.
Outside of the classroom, students can enjoy ballet; cultural festivals; international book fair, and internal tournaments.
