The Universidad Autónoma del Carmen, or Autonomous University of Carmen, was originally founded in 1967. Based in Ciudad del Carmen, Mexico, the university is divided into eight different schools: Administrative Economic Sciences; Chemical and Oil Sciences; Education and Humanities; Engineering and Technology; Health Sciences; Information Sciences; Law; and Natural Sciences.
The university’s facilities are spread across three campuses, all of which are based in the city or its immediate outskirts. Campus I is home to the majority of the academic schools (five of eight), as well as the university’s professional baseball team. Campus II is the site of the university’s high school and is located in the commercial district, while Campus III on the edge of the city houses the final three schools.
Located on Carmen Island, just off the coast of Mexico to the southeast of the country, Ciudad del Carmen is nicknamed the “Pearl of the Gulf” and was historically well known for its fishing industry. After oil was discovered here in the 1970s, the city grew considerably and is today home to many workers from both Mexico and Texas, lured here by the promise of working for oil companies such as Pemex. The city is also home to several other major companies.
