Established in 1919, Baku State University is the oldest and the largest university in Azerbaijan. We are delighted to be renowned as the country's top educational institution, where the most significant figures in the history of the Republic of Azerbaijan studied. We currently have 16 faculties with over 3000 personnel, with professors and teaching staff accounting for more than half of the total. More than 24,000 (including Branch, College and Lyceum) students enroll. We continue to expand as one of the leading universities in the region, embracing innovative ideas in education, building capabilities for future generations, targeting to achieve excellence in science and research, facilitating intercultural dialogue for knowledge exchange and transfer, and setting new educational standards in the country. BSU is partnering with more than 100 partner universities all over the world and welcomes students from more than 32 countries.
The university conducts an exchange of students and staff under the programs Erasmus + KA 107 and Mevlana. Moreover, BSU offers 12 double degree programs with the Universities from USA, Germany, France, Israel, Switzerland, and Kazakhstan. The UNESCO Chair on Human Rights and Information Law and ICESCO Chair on Biomedical Materials were established at the University in 2015 and 2022, respectively. BSU is a member of various esteemed associations and institutions, including the European Universities Association (EUA), Eurasian Universities Union (EURAS), the Eurasian Universities Association (EAU), the Association of State Universities of Caspian Region Countries, the Black Sea Universities Network (BSUN), CIS International Innovation Centre for Nanotechnology, the International Association of Schools of Social Work (IASSW), EIFL (Electronic Information for Libraries) and Federation of Universities of the Islamic World, which operates under ICESCO. There are 5 international centers or institutes at BSU. (Confucius Institute, Baku King Sejong Institute, Korean Information Technology Centre, Kazakh Centre named after Abay Kunanbayev). As being one of the key factors in the development strategy of BSU, scientific research plays a vital role as an integral part of education. Thus, the university has two research institutes - Institute of Physical Problems and Institute of Applied Mathematics, and the Excellence Centre for Research, Development, and Innovation. Moreover, BSU has also 2 education internship and Recreational Centers (Altygach and Guba districts), as well as a Kazakh branch in the region. There are also Young Talents Lyceum and College of Economics and Humanities which are operating under the supervision of BSU.
Baku State University has been institutionally accredited for a period of 5 (five) years by the decision of the Accreditation Council of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated June 8, 2023, and the corresponding order of the Chairperson of the Management Board of the Education Quality Assurance Agency (TKTA). Additionally, the Independent Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (IQAA) accredited 6 graduate programs (Inorganic Chemistry, PhysicalChemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Chemistry of High MolecularCompounds, Petrochemistry) of Baku State University. According to the decision of the Accreditation Council of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated September 20, 2023, and the corresponding order of the Chairman of the Management Board of the Agency for Quality Assurance in Education, the results of international program accreditations were officially recognized for state accreditation.
Baku State University is the only higher education institution that represent Azerbaijan in "Times HigherEducation" World University Ranking list, and also the only university from Azerbaijan included in the "Times Higher Education Subject Ranking" list in physical sciences (physics, chemistry, geology, astronomy, mathematics, etc.) and engineering sciences (chemical engineering, geological engineering, hydrogeological engineering, geophysical engineering, etc.).
