Mustansiriyah University

Background: Mustansiriyah University is a publicuniversity located to the north of the Baghdad city centre. It was established in1963 and became one of the leading universities in Iraq via thousands graduateswho influenced all aspect of business and research lives either locally orglobally.

A brief history:

Mustansiriyah, a symbol thatreflects the greatness of the Islamic Arab civilization when Baghdad was thehost of the intellectuals and the fountain of Islamic intellectual output. Theoriginal Mustansiriyah Madrasah was established in 1227 by the Abbasid CaliphAl-Mustansir and was one of the oldest universities in the world. The modernMustansiriyah University was established with the help and financial support ofthe Republic of Iraq Teacher’s Union in 1963, mainly providing evening courses.In 1964, the University was given the status of a semi-state institution andsome state financial support and the first batch of students (1077) wasgraduated in 1967. Currently, the university has 13 college and many researchcentres that are supporting undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Medicine,Dentistry, Pharmacy, health, humanities, applied and social sciences, religiousstudies, education and teaching, business and economics, and law and legalstudies.

Education: The universityholds the responsibility of teaching and training leaders in business andresearch who will serve in maintaining a good quality of life and innovations. Theuniversity has an excellent number of qualified staff with master and PhDdegrees. Teaching at the university is combining between practical and theoreticalcourses that prepare competent students able to grasp knowledge for the bestcareer.  

Research: The universityhas different well-equipped and well-monitored research laboratories distributedover most of the university scientific institutions. Many research groups haveconducted a variety of recent research subjects in fields of medicine,dentistry, biology, biochemistry, biotechnology and physics. Also, theuniversity has a significant bulk of research in humanities. Most of thisresearch has been published in several peer-reviewed journals. Also, theuniversity has increased its international research collaboration throughhundreds of master and PhD students sponsored to about 30 global universitiesin the UK, united states, Europe, Australia, India, Malaysia…etc.  

Facilities: The universityhas a commitment toward the community life via providing consultations toprivate and governmental agencies, also toward the community health via theuniversity’s teaching clinics and hospital. The university provides differentfinancial resources for students to complete their studies especially for thosewho recognised with a low economic status. The university welcomes allinternational students with affordable fees and living at the universityaccommodations. The accommodations are close to the university campus alongsidetransportation which is cheap and available for 24 hours. Many sport places andlounges are distributed over the university campus so that students and staffcan enjoy their free time. There are lots of health facilities thatinternational students can benefit from while studying at the university. Thevisa regulations for international students are simple and students can applydirectly via the Iraqi consulate at the student home country.

A vision for future: The university has a continuousstrategic plan to improve teaching quality and the university life for studentsand staff members. Due to COVID-19 world crises, the university has a greateffort to increase online teaching to minimize the risk of infection and tomaintain a high teaching level for all students.
