General
Cost of Living
All undergraduate and postgraduate students at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) are accommodated in university-managed hostels or hospital residential facilities. This structured residential model is a defining feature of the institution’s student support system. As a government-funded public medical university, accommodation and related living expenses are highly subsidized and institutionally regulated. This significantly reduces financial burden and ensures equitable access to education for students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. Unlike market-driven student housing systems seen in many cities, KGMU follows a controlled and welfare-oriented residential policy that maintains affordability, safety, and proximity to academic and clinical facilities.
Students reside in university hostels with nominal charges. Average hostel fees range from ₹2400–₹3500 annually, which include basic utilities such as water and electricity. These charges are fixed by the institution and are not influenced by fluctuations in the local rental market. Costs may vary slightly depending on room type and academic level, but overall remain highly subsidized. This structured accommodation system ensures financial predictability for students and their families, while also fostering a cohesive academic environment where students remain closely integrated with campus life and hospital training facilities.
Food expenses are also moderate due to the availability of institutional and subsidized options. Students typically utilize campus mess facilities or nearby regulated canteens that provide hygienic meals at affordable rates. The average food expenditure is approximately ₹1000–₹1500 per month, depending on dietary preferences and eating habits. Many students benefit from the proximity of hospital and campus food services, which offer economical meal plans designed for student needs. Because food access is campus-centered, students avoid higher commercial dining costs typically associated with urban living.
Transportation expenses for KGMU students are minimal. Academic buildings, hospital complexes, hostels, libraries, and laboratories are located within or immediately adjacent to the campus. Most students commute on foot, eliminating the need for daily public or private transport. For clinical rotations and emergency department postings, hostel allotments are planned in proximity to respective departments, further reducing transportation requirements. As a result, routine transport expenditure is negligible compared with institutions where students must commute across cities.
Basic utilities such as water and electricity are covered under hostel charges, further minimizing separate monthly expenses. Additionally, internet and Wi-Fi facilities are provided free of cost to all undergraduate and postgraduate students in hostels, classrooms, and the central library. This digital infrastructure supports academic learning, research activities, and communication without adding to personal expenditure. The university’s central library is well equipped with an extensive collection of medical textbooks, reference materials, and academic resources, reducing the need for students to incur additional costs on purchasing study materials. Access to institutional learning resources therefore contributes to overall affordability.
The integrated nature of the KGMU campus — combining academic spaces, hospital training facilities, residential accommodation, food services, and library infrastructure — creates a low-cost, high-support living model. Students benefit from reduced logistical expenses, subsidized essentials, and a regulated residential environment that prioritizes academic engagement and clinical training.
Overall, due to government funding, mandatory campus accommodation, subsidized services, and minimal transport requirements, KGMU offers one of the most affordable and structured living environments among medical universities in India. The institution’s model reflects a public health education framework focused on accessibility, student welfare, and cost containment rather than market-based living expenditure. This makes KGMU financially accessible for both domestic and international students while maintaining a comprehensive academic and clinical training ecosystem.

Inclusion in a QS ranking or QS Stars rating or publication on a QS platform/site does not constitute a statement by QS that an institution's qualifications are recognised for academic, professional, regulatory or immigration purposes in every jurisdiction. Students should check the recognition status of a qualification with the relevant national or professional authority in the country where they intend to study or work.
The country/territory designations used across QS rankings, ratings and platforms exist to present and compare higher education data clearly and consistently. They do not express any QS position on sovereignty, recognition, legal status or international boundaries. Where it helps users interpret the data, QS may group institutions according to the higher education system in which they operate, which in most cases corresponds to a country, but not always. Where questions of status or designation arise, QS uses terminology appropriate to the higher education context.
