The Chemistry Department offers programs leading to a doctorate of philosophy in the fields of bioinorganic, bioorganic, biophysical, inorganic, materials, organic, organometallic, physical, polymer chemistry, and in biochemistry and molecular biology. A variety of graduate courses are taught in the Chemistry Department, and advanced courses in other departments such as Biology, Physics, or Mathematics are available. The department offers programs leading to a doctorate of philosophy with specialization in various fields of chemistry. Emphasis is placed on tailoring programs to fit the specific needs and desires of the graduate student. To facilitate this goal, a committee of interested faculty works with each student to advise and review his/her progress in research work and course requirements. One year of a teaching apprenticeship is required of all candidates. In addition to formal course work (Six courses from specific areas of chemistry for Ph.D. students), all students must pass qualifying examinations and submit and defend a research thesis. Ph.D. candidates must also pass preliminary examinations. For further details, students should consult the appropriate departmental publications.
