The MA in French Studies specializes in the study of the French language as well as francophone culture and literatures all around the world. Our program focuses on literary history, criticism, and theory, which provide an excellent foundation for furthering French studies in a PhD program in any high profile university in Canada and abroad. The Department does its very best to tailor student programs based on their individual areas of interest for study and research. The Department has been expanding its interest areas to include a wide range of specializations, from the study of classic literatures to francophone cultures, translation studies, French Newfoundland Studies, and language acquisition. Potential candidates for the program will receive guidance and supervision from highly qualified and competent researchers and professors. Students may also have the opportunity to teach first year French courses – an invaluable university teaching experience! MA – The MA in French Studies may take the form of the study of the French language or of francophone literature, including the study of literary history, criticism, or theory. It may also include the study of French language cinema or of other aspects of francophone civilization. The program involves courses and a thesis, and can be completed in two years of full-time study.
