The EVNG program focuses on innovative technologies to address different applications in the environmental engineering area and seeks to provide research students with an understanding of effective environmental management strategies. The main research areas include: (1) Innovative water and wastewater treatment technologies, (2) Solid/hazardous waste management and waste recycling/reuse, (3) Contaminated land and groundwater remediation, (4) Indoor and outdoor air quality, and (5) Environmental sustainability and renewable energy.
The School has won numerous research grants and contracts from the government bodies (the Research Grants Council and the Innovation Technology Fund, etc.), industry and other external organizations. A number of research projects are available in the EVNG program.   1. Removal of carbon nanomaterial by biotreatment process 2. Novel adsorbents for the removal of sulfur dioxide 3. Chemical synthesis and application processing on the mechanical properties of waterborne polyurethane coatings 4. Removal of Arsenic from water using chitosan and nanochitosan 5. Catalytic ozonation of VOCs over porous materials 6. Removal of Cr(Vl) from NOM-rich groundwater by zero-valent iron: performance and mechanistic study 7. Combined electrochemical technologies with membrane bioreactor for wastewater treatment 8. Heavy metals extraction efficiency and mineral dissolution from artificially contaminated soil through the application of EDDS 9. Effects of bromide lons on formation and speciation of halogenated disinfection byproducts 10. Removal of chromium (VI) and arsenic (V) by zero-valent iron from humic acid-rich groundwater with various geochemical constituents 11. Effects of bromide on formation and speciation of halogenated disinfection byproducts in drinking water chlorination 12. Sesquiterpenes emission from common airborne fungal species 13. Study of phase transition and hygroscopic properties of pure and multi-component atmospheric particles by optical microscopic imaging and micro-raman spectroscopy 14. Novel adsorbents for sulphur dioxide removal 15. Investigations of operating conditions to improve the UV transmittance in chemically enhanced primary treatment
