About ADMIRAL MAKAROV NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SHIPBUILDING
Admiral Makarov National University of Shipbuilding (NUOS) is a leading higher education institution in Ukraine. Established in 1920, it is the only university in the country that trains specialists for the shipbuilding, machine-building, energy, and maritime sectors of Ukraine and other countries according to international standards and requirements.
This is confirmed by the receipt in 2014 of international and state quality certificates for specialist training — ISO 9001:2008 and DSTU ISO 9001:2009 — issued by the world leader among qualification societies, Bureau Veritas Certification Ukraine. The society conducts annual supervisory audits of NUOS's quality management system. In 2017, the university successfully passed a certification audit for compliance with the requirements of the updated ISO 9001:2015 standard. As a result, NUOS received certificates of conformity — ISO 9001:2015 (No. UA228700) and DSTU ISO 9001:2015 (No. UA228701), valid until February 8, 2021.
Over its 100-year history, the university has trained more than 100,000 specialists for domestic and international shipbuilding industries. Currently, the structure of NUOS includes 5 institutes, 4 faculties, the Kherson and Pervomaisky branches, 4 educational and scientific centers, the College of Shipbuilders, Pervomaisky College, 2 foreign educational and consulting centers, the multidisciplinary Maritime Lyceum named after Professor Alexandrov, and the Academy of Midshipmen. More than 7,500 students study at NUOS across 14 fields of knowledge and 29 specialties. The university provides training for highly qualified engineering and scientific personnel — junior specialists, junior bachelors, bachelors, and masters, in both full-time and part-time formats, as well as PhD candidates and doctoral researchers.
The educational process at NUOS is carried out by 49 departments, employing 541 academic staff, including 63 Doctors of Sciences, 90 Professors, 276 Candidates of Sciences, and 270 Associate Professors. Among higher educational institutions of accreditation levels III–IV in the Mykolaiv region, NUOS has for many years held a leading position in terms of the number of students, academic programs, faculty with scientific degrees and titles, scientific schools, and the scope of scientific research.
NUOS has a well-established and successfully functioning infrastructure for planning and conducting scientific research. This includes the university's scientific and expert council, scientific and technical councils in various research fields, and 15 scientific schools. These schools conduct research in areas such as:
Seaworthiness and the design of new types of vessels
Fuel preparation and combustion
Brazing and vacuum pressure welding
Environmental safety and energy conservation
Air conditioning and refrigeration
Promising energy technologies
Gas thermal coatings
Project management in high-tech industries
In addition, NUOS hosts 7 industry laboratories and 6 scientific and technical centers that are recognized both in Ukraine and abroad. These include centers for metrological certification of polymer systems, underwater technology, energy conservation, and environmental safety.
The university’s campus infrastructure includes four academic buildings, a student campus located in a green area on the peninsula between the Ingul and Southern Bug rivers, two sports and recreation complexes, three student dormitories, and two residential buildings. These facilities create favorable conditions for studying, sports, cultural engagement, intellectual development, recreation, and personal hobbies — supporting a student body of up to 9,000 individuals. NUOS also has a student government union that actively participates in university life.
Moreover, on the shores of the Black Sea — in the resort towns of Ochakiv and Koblevo — NUOS operates comfortable recreation centers for students and university staff.
