About Egas Moniz School of Health and Science
Egas Moniz School of Health and Science is a private Portuguese higher education institution, founded in 1987 and located in Costa da Caparica, Almada. Over the past decades, it has become a reference in health-related education, including dentistry, pharmaceutical sciences, biomedical sciences, veterinary medicine, nutrition, psychology, and forensic sciences.
Egas Moniz is more than a school; it promotes an educational model deeply connected with the community. The institution is committed to a training approach that combines technical excellence with human development, aiming to educate competent, ethical professionals with a strong sense of social responsibility.
The institution offers a comprehensive academic portfolio, ranging from undergraduate and master’s degrees to doctoral programmes in areas such as Pharmacy, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Nutrition, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Biomedical Laboratory Sciences, Gastronomy, and Criminal Psychology. Its master's programmes also include emerging and interdisciplinary fields such as Aquaculture, the One Health approach, Oral Medicine, and Public Health.
Additional master’s programmes include:
- Clinical Nutrition
- Community Pharmacy
- Cosmetic Sciences
- Forensic Laboratory Sciences
- Oral Surgery
- Geriatric Health and Active Ageing
- Health Education and Promotion
- Health Services Management
- Microbiology and Clinical Parasitology
- Clinical and Health Psychology
- Health Biotechnology
- Neurosciences
Practical training is a cornerstone of the academic experience. It is carried out in advanced laboratories, university clinics (dentistry, veterinary medicine, and community health), realistic clinical simulation environments, and innovative facilities such as the forensic laboratory and the “Crime House” (Casa do Crime). The institution also houses a University Veterinary Hospital — a centre of clinical, educational, and research excellence — and a Senior Residence, which supports ethical and interdisciplinary research on ageing, quality of life, and elder care.
The academic staff includes more than 400 highly qualified professors who integrate teaching, research, and community outreach. Research is primarily conducted through the Interdisciplinary Research Centre (CiiEM), which promotes impactful scientific, technological, and innovation projects in collaboration with national and international partners.
Egas Moniz fosters a multicultural environment, with approximately 37% of its students coming from outside Portugal. Courses are offered in Portuguese, English, and French, enhancing the institution’s global outlook. This international approach has been recognised in national rankings, which consistently highlight the school as one of the most innovative private institutions in areas such as public health, sustainability, and social impact.
In 2024, Egas Moniz became the first Portuguese health institution to implement the World Health Organization’s model within its curriculum. Through the simulation of international health assemblies, this pioneering project develops students' skills in research, negotiation, leadership, and scientific communication in realistic global contexts.
The school’s mission is to train professionals who are socially responsible and committed to the promotion of public health. Its core values include excellence, ethics, diversity, collaboration, and civic responsibility. As a civic university, Egas Moniz strives to be an agent of local and regional transformation, actively contributing to health literacy, equitable access to healthcare, and community well-being.
Its modern campus offers a dynamic and interdisciplinary learning environment, featuring university clinics, simulation centres, a veterinary hospital, a senior residence, student accommodation with over 250 beds, and well-equipped study spaces. Located just five minutes from Europe’s longest beach — Costa da Caparica — and only ten minutes from central Lisbon, the campus also provides an ideal setting for year-round sports and easy access to urban life.
The entire campus was developed within a sustainability framework, aimed at reducing ecological impact and encouraging responsible practices. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are actively integrated across teaching, research, and operations.
At Egas Moniz, we believe education should go beyond technical training. We prepare students to become agents of positive change — capable of making meaningful contributions both locally and globally.
