The Sociology component offers sociological analysis and research skills, help students to develop informed understanding of the major debates shaping today’s society, and cultivate a wider ‘sociological imagination’ about the contemporary world. The course explores social theory, research methods and ‘substantive’ modules equally in each year, revisiting certain core themes and skills at higher levels of analysis at various points in the programme. The Spanish component will equip students with the tools, skills and knowledge necessary to operate effectively in this global, multilingual and multicultural world. The French component offers linguistic skills to near-native proficiency and fluency. Students will also gain an understanding of French culture and society – its traditions, its complexities, its underlying ideas – and to develop their critical, analytical and collaborative skills. Language classes are supplemented by a series of thematic modules, also taught in French, which focus on contemporary French society, and particularly on French politics, history, sociolinguistics, media, film and literature.
