Applied Mathematics has a profound impact on our daily lives. Whether it is weather forecasts, search engines, climate research, secure online shopping, or movie recommendations, none of these would work the way they do without algorithms and tools from the mathematical sciences. More generally, Applied Mathematics is an inherently interdisciplinary subject which applies to many problems that arise in the physical, life and social sciences as well as in engineering. Applied Mathematics provides a broad set of qualitative and quantitative skills and knowledge for use in these fields. We offer a wide range of courses, and our faculty actively involves undergraduates in summer research projects and offers many independent studies every year. Information about these concentrations, including concentrations requirements, concentration advisors, honors program, alumni career paths and recent job placements, can be found on Focal Point or in our Undergraduate Handbook. The various concentrations in Applied Mathematics prepare students for a great variety of career opportunities: many of our students find employment in the banking and investment sector, but our graduates also work for consulting, insurance, pharmaceutical, and software or service companies; some of our students go on to graduate school or to medical school (job placements of our recent graduates are listed on Focal Point for each of our four concentrations). If you would like to find out more about what Applied Mathematics is useful for and which types of careers people pursue with a degree in Applied Mathematics, please have a look at SIAM's career brochure, or go to the career pages of AMS, MAA and SIAM. This program based on Computer Science.
