Budapest offers a high quality of life at a relatively affordable cost compared to many other European capitals. International students should plan with a monthly budget of around 400,000–475,000 HUF (approx. 1,000–1,200 EUR) , depending on lifestyle and accommodation choices.
Public transport: with a student discount pass, a monthly pass can cost as little as 1,000 HUF
Other costs: utilities, phone, study materials, and leisure activities
Self-funded students should ensure they can cover all living expenses in addition to tuition fees, including initial costs such as housing deposits and setup fees.
Students receiving the scholarships ( Stipendium Hungaricum , Diaspora Scholarship, etc.) benefit from tuition fee exemption, a monthly stipend, and accommodation support (dormitory place or contribution to rent), as well as health insurance. While this support significantly reduces financial pressure, the stipend is designed to contribute to living costs, so additional personal funds may still be needed.
With its affordable public transport, wide range of accommodation options, and student discounts, Budapest provides a balanced and student-friendly environment for international studies.
