Egas Moniz School of Health and Science

Egas Moniz School of Health and Science is a private Portuguese higher education institution, founded in 1987 and located in Costa da Caparica, Almada. Over the past decades, it has become a reference in health-related education, including dentistry, pharmaceutical sciences, biomedical sciences, veterinary medicine, nutrition, psychology, and forensic sciences.

Practical training is a cornerstone of the academic experience. It is carried out in advanced laboratories, university clinics (dentistry, veterinary medicine, and community health), realistic clinical simulation environments, and innovative facilities such as the forensic laboratory and the “Crime House” (Casa do Crime). The institution also houses a University Veterinary Hospital — a centre of clinical, educational, and research excellence — and a Senior Residence, which supports ethical and interdisciplinary research on ageing, quality of life, and elder care.

The academic staff includes more than 400 highly qualified professors who integrate teaching, research, and community outreach. Research is primarily conducted through the Interdisciplinary Research Centre (CiiEM), which promotes impactful scientific, technological, and innovation projects in collaboration with national and international partners.

Egas Moniz fosters a multicultural environment, with approximately 37% of its students coming from outside Portugal. Courses are offered in Portuguese, English, and French, enhancing the institution’s global outlook. This international approach has been recognised in national rankings, which consistently highlight the school as one of the most innovative private institutions in areas such as public health, sustainability, and social impact.

In 2024, Egas Moniz became the first Portuguese health institution to implement the World Health Organization’s model within its curriculum. Through the simulation of international health assemblies, this pioneering project develops students' skills in research, negotiation, leadership, and scientific communication in realistic global contexts.

The entire campus was developed within a sustainability framework, aimed at reducing ecological impact and encouraging responsible practices. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are actively integrated across teaching, research, and operations.
