Overview

Estonian Academy of Arts – Eesti Kunstiakadeemia – EKA

Founded in 1914, the Estonian Academy of Arts is the oldest and only public university of visual culture in Estonia.  The Academy offers over 30 curricula in the four faculties of Architecture, Design, Art Culture and Fine Arts. The Estonian Academy of Arts has eight international Master’s programmes and two doctoral programmes in English, and one international BA programme in Russian.  1200 students from all parts of the world are engaged in the curricula to cultivate their analytical abilities and critical thinking with the aim to develop into environmentally and socially conscientious creators and scholars. They are taught and supported by lecturers and instructors who are professionals in their field - internationally recognised artists, architects, designers, and scholars who provide unique, individualised study and personal mentorship in an interdisciplinary and synergetic atmosphere. About 10% of the student body comes from foreign countries.

In 2017, EKA was listed among Top 200 Architecture and Design Universities by QS World University Rankings.
The Estonian Academy of Arts’ new building, designed by its alumni, was inaugurated in 2018 and has since received over ten awards for its architecture, including interior design. Located between the picturesque UNESCO world heritage medieval capital Tallinn and the vibrant and hip Kalamaja district, the Academy stands as an oasis of art culture in the midst.
The Academy partners with the world’s top architecture, art, and design universities and is a member of the main education and professional networks in its fields. This gives the students and employees ample opportunities for broadening their perspectives as artists and designers. EKA is the founding member of Estonian Design Centre and Estonian Centre for Architecture and actively participates in the planning of state design, urban planning, art and education strategies. The members of EKA play an active role in the betterment of the local society and living environment. Through and alongside its alumni, the Estonian Academy of Arts represents the country of Estonia at the important world arenas.  The Academy welcomes socially sensitive, motivated, and creative thinkers.
