The Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMinna) is widely regarded as one of Nigeria's more affordable higher institutions, and this affordability extends beyond just tuition to the general lifestyle of its students.
School Fees
FUTMinna currently charges approximately ₦ 150,000 for new students and ₦ 132,000 for returning students as tuition fees. On top of this, new students are required to pay a one-time, non-refundable acceptance fee of ₦25,000, while on-campus hostel accommodation approximately costs ₦ 100,000 per academic year, covering bed space and maintenance.
Accommodation
Students who cannot secure on-campus housing turn to off-campus options. Off-campus accommodation starts at around ₦ 80 ,000 per year for a basic single room and can go as high as ₦ 200 ,000 annually for a fully self-contained apartment. Since Minna is a mid-sized northern Nigerian city, rent is considerably cheaper than what students in Lagos or Abuja would face.
Food and Feeding
Feeding is one of the most significant recurring expenses for students. A student living on a modest budget and relying mostly on home-cooked meals and local market produce typically spends between ₦ 30,000 and ₦50,000 on food per month. Students who eat out more frequently at campus canteens or local restaurants may spend slightly more.
Transportation
Getting around Minna is relatively inexpensive. Using motorbike taxis (okadas) and public buses, a student can manage transportation costs of between ₦6,000 and ₦10,000 per month, with most FUTMinna students falling on the lower end of that range given the city's compact size.
Data, Airtime, and Miscellaneous
Beyond the basics, students typically spend between ₦5,000 and ₦10,000 monthly on mobile data and airtime. Personal care, stationery, health needs, and other miscellaneous expenses add another ₦10,000 to ₦20,000 per month. These are costs that students often overlook when planning, yet they form an important part of the overall budget alongside accommodation and feeding.
Overall Estimate
Putting it all together, the average FUTMinna student spends roughly ₦51,000 to ₦80,000 per month on living expenses alone, excluding school fees. Over a ten-month academic session, that amounts to approximately ₦510,000 to ₦800,000. When annual school fees and accommodation costs are factored in, a new student's total annual expenditure falls in the range of ₦887,000 to ₦1,235,000, dropping to roughly ₦844,000 to ₦1,192,000 from the second year onward. Compared to universities in cities like Lagos or Abuja, the cost of living in Minna is considerably lower, making FUTMinna a financially accessible and practical choice for many Nigerian families.
Scholarships
Selecting the right scholarship can be a daunting process. With countless options available, students often find themselves overwhelmed and confused. The decision can be especially stressful for those facing financial constraints or pursuing specific academic or career goals.
