Hong Kong Metropolitan University

Hong Kong Metropolitan University is a comprehensive university focusing on professional, applied and practical academic programmes to adapt to market trends and meet the needs of industry.  These programmes cover a broad range of disciplines from the Schools of Arts & Social Sciences, Business & Management, Education & Languages, Nursing & Health Sciences, and Science & Technology.

The University was founded in 1989 by government legislation as the Open Learning Institute of Hong Kong.  In 1997, it became the Open University of Hong Kong, and in 2021, Hong Kong Metropolitan University.

Today, the University has over 10,000 undergraduate students studying for a Bachelor's degree with Honours, and 3,000 students studying for the master’s degrees by course work, as well as a growing number of research degree students studying for a master’s or doctoral degrees.  The University also has another 6000 students studying part-time at the various degree levels, in the face-to-face and distance learning modes.

Over the years, the University has continued to enhance the research infrastructure and capacity.  Research is conducted in the five research institutes and three research centres covering a wide spectrum of areas: international business and governance, innovative technology and sustainability, open and innovative education, public and social policy research, bilingual learning and teaching, digital culture and humanities, etc.  Researchers receive funding from the Research Grants Council's Competitive Research and Funding Scheme for the local self-financing degree sector.
