The Graduate School (GS) plays a pivotal role in managing and developing research postgraduate (RPg) and undergraduate (Ug) research education at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). Since its establishment in 2020, GS has expanded to become the fastest-growing graduate school in Hong Kong in the 2022/23 academic year. 

With a rich history spanning over 80 years, PolyU has been consistently ranked among the top 100 universities worldwide . The University prides itself on its innovative approach to achieving scholarly success. 

RPg Education 

1. Diverse PhD and MPhil Programmes  

Across six faculties and three schools, PolyU offers a wide range of PhD and MPhil programmes in different disciplines, including Business , Construction and Environment , Engineering , Health and Social Sciences , Humanities , Science , Design , Fashion and Textiles , and Hotel and Tourism management . Our niche research areas span a broad spectrum, covering deep space exploration, AI and robotics, advanced manufacturing, smart cities, carbon neutrality, healthcare and food security. 

2. Holistic Research Education 

Beyond discipline-specific coursework, PolyU’s research education is designed to equip students with fundamental academic knowledge and all-round transferable skills essential for their personal growth and future career success. Throughout their study journey, students have access to various global learning opportunities and extensive networking platforms, enabling them to expand their horizons and build valuable connections within and beyond academia.

PolyU is home to many world-renowned scholars from diverse disciplines who can provide expert research guidance. They have secured prestigious funding from the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong and international bodies. Their innovative inventions have also won accolades at global exhibitions. In 2023, over 200 PolyU scholars were ranked among the top 2% most-cited scientists by Stanford University. Furthermore, 15 PolyU academics were recognised in the list of Highly Cited Researchers 2023 by Clarivate Analytics.

URIS is a prestigious two-year programme that promotes Ug research and nurtures future scholars. This structured programme provides integrated Ug research training through a range of activities, empowering students to build research records, establish research networks and gain field exposure. URIS students will be offered financial support including scholarships and project grants.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University offers a wide range of PhD degrees, ranging from three to eight years of studies given the applicant’s academic qualification(s) and study mode. There are six faculties and three schools, covering business, construction and environment, engineering, health and social sciences, humanities, science, design, fashion and textiles, and hotel and tourism management. The medium of teaching language is English. PolyU invites high-quality candidates with strong research capabilities, diverse cultural perspectives, innovative leadership skills and research passion to apply and unleash their full potential for impactful research. Year-round applications open every January, May and September, with attractive and prestigious admission scholarships.

There are two teaching semesters, each lasting for 13 weeks (about 3 months), and a 7-week summer term. The teaching of Semester One starts in late August or early September.  The teaching of Semester Two commences in mid-January and that of Summer Term runs from May to July.  
Research students should continue to follow the PolyU's academic calendar with regard to learning and teaching activities including the program start date, subject registration, timetabling, add/drop period, etc. 

Non-refundable and non-transferrable Fee for each application is HK$300.   The tuition fee for full-time MPhil/ PhD studies is HK$84,200 per annum (without a stipend) and HK$42,100 per annum (with a stipend).   The tuition fee for part-time MPhil/ PhD studies is HK$42,100 per annum. 
Upon acceptance of an admission offer to the PhD/MPhil programme, candidates are required to pay a registration fee of HK$5,000. This registration fee will be credited to your tuition fee, which will be payable upon your admission to the University. 

PolyU provides full-time PhD students with a range of admission scholarships during the normal study period, enabling them to pursue their research interests and achieve impactful goals. Attractive admission scholarships include the prestigious Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS), PolyU Presidential PhD Fellowship Scheme (PPPFS), and the PolyU Research Postgraduate Scholarship (PRPgS). Successful HKPFS nominees will automatically receive an early admission offer with guaranteed PolyU scholarships (mutually exclusive).  
Also, the distinctive PolyU Sports Scholarship Scheme for RPg Students (PSSS) and the International PhD Fellowship Scheme (IPFS) reflect the well-rounded nature of our RPg education.
