About Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH)
As an institute with just 14 years of its existence, IIT Hyderabad (IITH) is doing well, almost on par with some of the first-generation IITs. With the ranking of 9th among all the engineering institutes, Top-12 Research Institutes in the country and 14th overall rank in the country as per NIRF and with being within the Top-7 ranks among technical institutes from India in QS world rankings & entry to Top 600 Club in the World Ranking as per QS World Rankings make IITH stands tall. This is essentially due to over 286 dynamic young faculty of the institute with an average age of about 39, who work hard and take up challenges without the fear of failure, putting IITH at the forefront of R&D innovations. A healthy faculty-to-student ratio of 1:15 and a good mix of UG and PG programs with a UG to PG to PhD ratio of ~40:30:30 makes IITH a unique place for teaching and research. The strong research culture at IITH is reflected in around 1700+ sponsored research projects of Rs. 535+ Crores that our faculty members have been handling, with the last year’s funds inflow being more than Rs. 5150 Crores. Recently IITH has made a mark by making India the First 5G SoC IoT ‘koala’ & World's Smallest Microscope ‘Muscope’. The number of Scopus-indexed publications in the last 14 years is close to 7500+, reflecting the thriving research activity. IITH has a strong start-up culture with a dedicated space for incubation and a research park. With about 1.5 lakh sqft of space each for the above activities, which will significantly boost the entrepreneurship activity at IITH.
The fractal academics with an interdisciplinary approach, with departments such as AI, Climate Change, Engineering sciences, and interdisciplinary PhD provide a unique academic atmosphere at IITH. The BTech program in AI, Biomedical Engineering (1st introduced among the IIT system), along with eight industry-oriented MTech Programs in 2020, three Industry Oriented BTech Programs in Computational Engineering, Industrial Chemistry & Bioinformatics started in 2021 & IC Design in 2022, 9 MTech & MDes Online Programs, MTech in Techno-Entrepreneurship, FIRST Fellowship for Scholars of Foreign National, a minor in entrepreneurship, Executive MTech in Data Science together with the Design and Liberal Arts departments represent the unique and diversified academic fabric of IITH. The institute has taken up several industry-oriented measures this year. A semester-long internship in the 6th semester for BTech/BDes students and a mandatory 1-credit course on “Industry Lectures” are a few. At least 50% of MTech projects from now on will be on industry-defined problems. Several new industry-oriented MTech programs such as Additive manufacturing (with DRDO support), E-waste resource engineering & management (jointly with C-MET, Hyderabad, and with MeitY support), Medical device innovation (jointly with AIG, Hyderabad), Energy science & technology, Integrated sensor systems, Network & information security, Polymers & biosystems engineering and Smart mobility, will enhance our outreach to industry. IITH is also planning to introduce Online for other disciplines so that industry experts can boost their academics and perform well in their fields of interest.
