Indian Institute of Technology Ropar

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar is located in the Sutlej river basin in the historic city of Rupnagar in the state of Punjab, India. The city is an important site of the Indus Valley Civilizations, one of the world’s oldest civilizations. Nothing captures the essence of the institute’s location better than the iconic main gate, featuring four pillars with inscriptions of the findings from the ancient civilization with a model of the crystal lattice structure on top of each pillar, signifying the delivery of modern science and technology from the base of a great civilization.  

Welcome to IIT Ropar, an institute of national importance constituted under the Indian Institutes of Technology framework of the government of India. The institute started its operations from a transit campus in 2008. Subsequently, the institute moved to the 525-acre permanent campus, which houses all major science and engineering departments. All the departments have state-of-the-art research facilities and well-equipped laboratories for academics.  

Being a young institute, IIT Ropar is characterized by its freedom in research and academics, dynamic management, and speed of execution. IIT Ropar aspires to create researchers who are passionate, self-driven, and goal-oriented. This shared value is demonstrated in our work each day by more than 170 faculty members, 2600 students, and 300 staff members. From the organizational standpoint, the institute consists of 11 departments and 2 centers of excellence, one in artificial intelligence and data science and the other in agriculture and water technology.

The faculty members of the institute are amongst the best in the world, with all having PhD degrees and training from the top universities in India and around the world. The faculty members frequently receive awards of national and international significance and sponsored research projects from public and private companies/funding agencies. The students of the institute are frequently awarded for their work at national and international conferences. Admission to academic UG programmeis extremely competitive at all levels, be it undergraduate, postgraduate, or doctoral level.

Beyond research and academics, the institute provides some of the best facilities for on-campus hostel accommodation, connectivity, sports facilities, a medical center, and cultural activities. The fully residential campus features hostel buildings with a 5-star GRIHA rating for green buildings with Gym. The campus has campus-wide WiFi connectivity. The campus has playground facilities for athletics, football, cricket, badminton, volleyball, and table tennis. There is a Student Activity Centre which houses a music room, stationary and general store, a few eateries and juice centre, a cafe and a bank.
