Postgraduate Overview

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine is a world-leading centre for research and postgraduate education in public and global health. Our mission is to improve health worldwide; working in partnership to achieve excellence in public and global health research, education and translation of knowledge into policy and practice. Founded by Sir Patrick Manson, LSHTM began as the London School of Tropical Medicine in 1899 at the London Docks, and nineteen students formed the first intake admitted on 2 October 1899. LSHTM is now based in Bloomsbury, where it has two main sites at Keppel Street and Tavistock Place. Today, our staff, students and alumni work in government, academia, international agencies and health services across the world. This year, LSHTM celebrates 120 years of health innovation.

LSHTM delivers expert training to the next generation of global health leaders to strengthen systems and prevent outbreaks.

They offer specialised online and London-based Master’s programmes, as well as professional diplomas and short courses. All of these programmes are taught at postgraduate level and are taught by experts in their field.

Students will receive rigorous training in a wide range of disciplines, which will equip them with the tools and advanced research skills they need to launch their public health career.

Master’s degrees

The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine offers a range of specialised taught Master’s degrees in public and global health at its London campus.

All programmes are available full-time over one year, though some can be studied as part-time courses over two years, as split study with a year-long break.

LSHTM welcomes applications from medical students wishing to intercalate after their third year of study from any recognised university in the world. Ways to study explained.

Distance Learning

Around 3,000 students learn via distance learning at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

These flexible, online programmes can be taken as a PG Certificate, PG Diploma or Master's degree. Each module is also available as a short course, and the structure of the programmes is flexible, so students can study at their own pace.
