Located in Kantharawichai, in the north-eastern province of Maha Sarakham in Thailand, Mahasarakham University is a comprehensive public university made up of 17 faculties and two campuses. It was originally established in 1963 as Mahasarakham Teachers Training College before gaining university status in 1994, and has since enjoyed considerable growth in its academic infrastructure, facilities and services.
Mahasarakham offers a total of 177 undergraduate and postgraduate programs in a wide range of fields, and has the distinction of being the only Thai university to offer postgraduate programs in paleontology as well as a Bachelor of Arts in the Khmer language. There is a strong focus on research, and the university was the first in Thailand to open a Natural Medicinal Mushroom Museum, intended to be a learning center to expand people’s knowledge of natural medicinal mushrooms.
Mahasarakham has around 41,000 students enrolled, and attracts international students from fellow Asian countries such as Japan and South Korea, as well as further afield, such as the UK and the US. It offers several English-taught programs aimed at international students:
