Makhambet Utemisov West Kazakhstan University is one of the oldest higher educational institutions in Kazakhstan. Its history dates back to 1932, when the second pedagogical institute in Kazakhstan — the M.N. Pokrovsky Pedagogical Institute — was opened in Uralsk. It initially included three faculties: Language and Literature, Biology, and Physics and Mathematics.

In 1937, it was renamed the Uralsk Kazakh Pedagogical Institute named after A.S. Pushkin. During the pre-war period, the institute developed into a major higher education institution. Its structure included a four-year pedagogical and a two-year teacher-training institute, full-time and evening preparatory departments, pre-university training courses, and a correspondence division. There were four faculties: Natural Sciences, Physics and Mathematics, Language and Literature, and History (opened in 1938).

In 1982, the Uralsk Pedagogical Institute was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honour.

Recognizing its strong academic potential, wide range of specialties, and well-developed facilities, the Uralsk Pedagogical Institute named after A.S. Pushkin was transformed into the West Kazakhstan Humanitarian University named after A.S. Pushkin by a decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan in May 1996.

On February 14, 2000, by Government Decree №236, the West Kazakhstan State University (WKSU) was established through the merger of three universities in the West Kazakhstan region: the West Kazakhstan Humanitarian University named after A.S. Pushkin, the West Kazakhstan Agricultural University, and the Dauletkerey Institute of Arts.

On November 5, 2002, WKSU was reorganized through the separation of the West Kazakhstan Agrarian and Technical University.

On May 30, 2003, by Government Decree №497, the West Kazakhstan State University was named after Makhambet Utemisov.

In 2005, in Paris, the university received the «Golden SPI Medal» from the International Association for the Promotion of Industry. WKSU was also awarded the prestigious «EUROPEAN QUALITY» prize.

For its high-quality educational programs, WKSU received recognition at the international conference «EuroEducation 2006: Integration of European Experience» in Oxford, UK. The university was also honored with «THE UNITED EUROPE» award for its contribution to European integration. In 2006, WKSU was recognized as a «Leader of the National Economy» at an international summit in Moscow and received an honorary diploma and medal.

The university’s innovative activities are regularly recognized at international forums such as «Informatization of Education in Kazakhstan and the CIS Countries». At the international exhibition in Almaty, WKSU received the nomination «For Training Highly Qualified Specialists». At the 3rd Kazakhstan International Exhibition «Education and Science in the 21st Century» in Astana, the university was awarded diplomas «For the Development and Implementation of Integrated Educational Programs» and «For the Best Automated University Management System». At the 4th Kazakhstan International Exhibition «Education and Science of the 21st Century» (Astana), the university received a diploma «For the Best University Publication».

According to the results of the independent Russian agency Reuters (2009), WKSU was included in the ranking of the 500 most renowned universities in the world.

In May 2013, several educational programs received confirmation of international accreditation from the well-known German agency ACQUIN, recognized throughout Europe.

On October 11, 2019, by Government Decree №752, the Republican State Enterprise on the Right of Economic Management «Makhambet Utemisov West Kazakhstan State University» was reorganized, in accordance with Kazakhstan’s legislation, into the «Non-Profit Joint-Stock Company « Makhambet Utemisov West Kazakhstan University»» with 100% state ownership.

In 2019, the university successfully passed institutional accreditation by IAAR for a period of 7 years (№AA0156/1, valid from 24.05.2019 to 23.05.2026).

According to the «Webometrics-2024» ranking, the university’s website ranks 17th among 127 universities in Kazakhstan.

The structure of WKU includes six faculties (Natural and Geographical; Physics and Mathematics; Pedagogical; Philological; History, Economics, and Law; Culture and Arts), a scientific library, an editorial and publishing center, an ecological and biogeochemical testing laboratory, and several other units.

The university’s facilities include 8 academic buildings, 4 dormitories, 3 sports halls, a country base, and a scientific library with a collection of over one million books.

Educational activities at WKU are conducted within a two-tier system: bachelor’s and master’s degrees, in Kazakh and Russian, in full-time and accelerated full-time formats, in accordance with state license №KZ84LAM00001209 (reissued on 05.03.2025) and its appendices. and their appendices.
