The Institute has a
humble beginning as the Regional Engineering College Warangal (RECW). This was
the 1st REC established in the chain of RECs. In September 2002, it
was renamed as National Institute of Technology. NIT Warangal was given the
status of Institute of National Importance on 15th August 2007 by
the Act of Parliament. The erstwhile REC Warangal started functioning in 1959
with Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Departments. The Departments
of Chemical Engineering and Metallurgical Engineering were started in the years
1964 and 1965 respectively. In 1971, the Institute started the undergraduate
program in Electronics and Communication Engineering. B. Tech in Computer
Science & Engineering was started in 1983. In 2006, the Institute started a
Bachelors program in Biotechnology. B.Tech programs in Mathematics &
Computing and VLSI were started in
academic year. 2023-24. B.Tech Computer Science and Engineering
(Artificial Intelligence & Data Science) was started in the academic year
2024-25. The newest Department is the Department of Computational and Data Sciences, started in the year
2025. The institute offers 11 B.Tech programs and 35 Masters programs in
Engineering, Sciences, Computer Applications and Management. It offers doctoral
programs in all the STEM and Humanities areas across its 15 Departments. NIT
Warangal is a residential institute with nearly 7000 (UG & PG) students
apart from nearly 800 Ph.D Scholars. It has 380 faculty members and 360
administrative and supporting staff. Most of the B.Tech and M.Tech programs
offered by the institute are accredited by the NBA. The institute had the
benefit of USESCO assistance during the formative stages, and later on from the
Overseas Development Administration of the UK. In November 2012, NIT Warangal
entered into an MoU with 12 European Higher Education Institutes and seven
other Indian Institutes and became a partner institute of the HERITAGE Program.
The students have the opportunity of participating in the Heritage program. The
Institute has successfully completed 3 phases of TEQIP. NIT Warangal is
situated in a self-contained residential campus located in a beautiful land of
about 248 acres at a distance of about 150 km from Hyderabad. Warangal enjoys a
unique position in the cultural and historical map of the state. Historic
buildings, lovely gardens, wildlife sanctuaries and lakes in the vicinity are
other places of interest for visitors. The place enjoys a good climate
throughout the year except for the patches of hot summer during May-June. The
campus has 20 Halls Residence of capacities more than 1500 for accommodating boys,
three hostels for girls and one hostel for foreign students. It has seven food
