Osh Technological University (OshTU)

Founded in 1963, Osh Technological University (OshTU) stands as the premier technological institution in southern Kyrgyzstan. Located in Osh, a key cultural and economic center, OshTU has evolved into a vital hub for education and innovation. Through its six specialized institutes, the university offers a wide range of programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, postgraduate, and doctoral (PhD) levels, training experts in disciplines critical to modern development, including engineering, technology, economics, construction, energy, and information technology.

Institute of Innovative Information Technologies  – Focuses on IT and digital innovation.

Institute of Architecture and Construction  – Specializes in sustainable design and infrastructure.

Institute of Economics and Management  – Prepares leaders in economics and business.

Institute of Energy and Transport  – Advances energy systems and transportation technology.

Institute of Technology and Nature Management  – Combines technology with environmental sustainability.

 Mission and Impact

OshTU is dedicated to producing highly qualified specialists who can contribute to the advancement of Kyrgyzstan’s economy, production, technology, and engineering sectors. Its mission, updated in 2021, emphasizes fostering competitive professionals capable of thriving internationally while driving sustainable development in the region. The university achieves this through a blend of rigorous academics and practical, innovative research.

Impact on Society

OshTU significantly influences southern Kyrgyzstan’s economy and academia. Annually, it graduates around 1,000 students, with over 70% finding employment locally, highlighting its economic relevance. The university also fosters research through its dissertation council and publishes OshTU News, a scientific journal showcasing its contributions. With approximately 10,000 students and a faculty of 491—including 18 doctors of science and 112 candidates of science—OshTU maintains a strong academic environment.

Innovation at the Core

In 2024, OshTU restructured its Technopark into the Innovative Scientific and Technological Center, established on July 2, 2024, per Order № 09-04/405. This shift, approved by the Academic Council on June 28, 2024, aims to create a scientific-industrial complex. The center has launched notable projects:

Eco-Drone Initiative : In collaboration with a Chinese company, OshTU is developing eco-drones to monitor air quality, water pollution, and vehicle emissions. These drones provide real-time data, with potential commercial uses such as sales or leasing for environmental monitoring, data platforms for research, agricultural applications, and ecological consulting services.

Green Digital Project : Winning first place at the “Green Digital Creator” hackathon, this project secured a €10,000 grant. It features a mobile app, “Green Bonus,” and automated machines (fondomats) that reward users with bonuses for recycling plastic bottles. The initiative promotes sustainable behavior and aims to expand nationwide, enhancing ecological awareness.

These projects underscore OshTU’s focus on sustainability and technological solutions to environmental issues.

Fostering Entrepreneurship

OshTU nurtures innovation beyond the classroom. Its Enactus team excels in national competitions, promoting social entrepreneurship, while startup programs like “Student Startup” and the Startup Marathon encourage students to develop entrepreneurial ventures. Hackathons and training sessions further enhance these efforts, solidifying OshTU’s reputation as an incubator for future innovators.
