Petra Christian University

Petra Christian University (PCU) or Universitas Kristen Petra (UK Petra, in Indonesian) was established in 22 September 1961. This year, we are celebrating our sixty-year anniversary (diamond jubilee). PCU is located in Surabaya, the second largest city in Indonesia. As a private university, PCU is run under Petra Christian University Foundation or Yayasan Perguruan Tinggi Kristen Petra (YPTK Petra, in Indonesian). Currently, PCU has a total student body of approximately 8,500 students, with 307 full time faculty staff, including six international faculty staff. Among the faculty staff, 100 of them hold doctorate degrees.

Our vision is ‘to be a caring and global university with commitment to Christian values’. Petra Christian University strives to consistently build-up its credibility and reputation, both nationally and internationally, especially in the field of higher education.

To achieve our vision, one of the initiatives taken is pro-actively building-up network with universities world-wide. To date, we have more than 90 active international university partners, as well as international professional bodies. In addition, PCU is playing as an active member of a number of international associations in the field of higher education, such as Asian University Presidents Forum (AUPF) and Association of Christian Universities and Colleges in Asia (ACUCA). As a result, our students have their opportunities to get joint or double degrees from our international university partners, such as in the Netherland, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Korea, China, Taiwan, Thailand, Australia, and the United States. For shorter alternatives, our students have their opportunities to go for a student exchange in many universities world-wide, as well as participating in various summer programs abroad. For in-bound scheme, PCU is hosting international students to pursue their degrees, participating in student exchange programs at PCU, as well as organizing a well-known International Community Outreach Program (COP), Petra Summer Program (PSP), Sura-Bali Summer Program, and other international programs for students. Limited scholarships are available for international students.

This international networking also expands opportunities for our faculty members to carry-out research collaboration with their international counter parts, to regularly participate in various development program such as United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia (UBCHEA) Fellows Program for future university leaders, and DAAD development programs. This international networking initiative has resulted in several other programs, founded by PCU and international university partners, such as Asia Summer Program (ASP) - an international summer program hosted alternately by different Asian universities, Asian Faculty Workshop Program (AFW) – an international initiative to enhance the skills of our faculty members, also being hosted alternately by different universities in the region. PCU has been granted as the host for King Sejong Institute (KSI), an international center for learning Korean culture and language, fully supported by South Korean Government and by the King Sejong Foundation (South Korea).

During the sixty-year service as a university, PCU has graduated 43,774 graduates. The alumni have been working in many different parts of the world, encompassing at least four continents, i.e. Asia, North America, Europe and Australia. Quite a number of them are now playing important roles and positions in their respective field, such as being professionals in various global companies or public sectors, building-up their own businesses, as well as being professors in many reputable universities worldwide, such as at the University of New South Wales (Australia), Queensland University of Technology (Australia), University of Southern Queensland (Australia), Heriot-Watt University (United Kingdom), Loughborough University (United Kingdom), Iowa State University (USA), and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (Korea).

In its sixty-year service in the field of higher education in Indonesia, Petra Christian University has emerged as one premier university in Indonesia. For three consecutive years from 2015 to 2017, PCU has been ranked the first among all private universities in Indonesia, by our Ministry of Education and Culture (before was Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education). In the last assessment in 2020, PCU was placed in the 21st rank nationally (overall, among all public and private higher institutions, in total there are 4,617 institutions of higher education in Indonesia), or the second among the private higher institutions in Indonesia (see http://klasterisasi-pt.kemdikbud.go.id). In international level, PCU has been rated with the highest five-star rating by the Global Accreditation Association, since 2013.
