Founded by the decree of Empress Catherine II in 1773, Saint-Petersburg Mining University is the first technical higher educational institution in Russia. 

Today the university boasts a unique combination of the richest tradition and modern state-of-the-art technologies and facilities across its eight schools, including:

Saint-Petersburg Mining University is also the initiator of a number of international projects, such as the Russian-UK Raw Materials Dialogue, as well as the Russian-German Raw Materials Forum. The Russian-German Raw Materials Forum was established under the auspices, along with the direct participation of Russian President, Vladimir Putin, and German Chancellor, Angela Merkel.

Saint-Petersburg Mining University’s three campuses are located on the banks of the Neva river on Vasilyevsky Island in the historic center of St. Petersburg with each one boasting a number of cutting-edge technological facilities and learning spaces. 

The university’s library has the richest collection of Russian and foreign scientific books, textbooks, and journals including rare artefacts of the 14th century, as well as over 1,200,000 items on mining, geology, metallurgy, natural and technical sciences in more than 20 languages. Students also have access to Springer, Web of Science, and Scopus. 

The university boasts a number of dedicated and specialized laboratories and research centers across a wide range of disciplines where students and scientists are able to carry out research of any complexity. These include the laboratories of environmental monitoring, oil and gas laboratories, laboratories of Orica: Australian multinational corporation, the world's largest producer of explosives, as well as the laboratories of Schneider Electric: a European multinational corporation that specializes in energy management and automation solutions. 

A special pride of the university is the Gornyi Hotel, which hosts national and international scientific congresses, conferences and symposia as well as foreign language courses. It also accommodates students, professors and guests who visit the city. 

Saint-Petersburg Mining University is home to a diverse, supportive and inclusive student community of 12,000 students, 700 of which are international. With a wide range of support services and activities, there’s something for everyone to get involved with and make the most of the student experience. 

Leisure and extra-curricular activities are popular with students to help maintain a healthy work-life balance, including parties and events dedicated to professional and national holidays, as well as the Student Spring Festival and Mining Museum. Students can also learn about the history of Russia, as well as the country’s customs and traditions which play an integral part of life at the university. 

There are also numerous student clubs, such as the International Friendship club, and youth organization which unites the university's students from Russia and abroad in order to boost their intercultural networking interest and skills.  

Sports clubs and teams are also popular amongst students as they have access to a modern 25-meter pool, climbing wall, as well as training halls for martial arts, gyms and more. 

There are also many cafés and canteens located around each campus. 

And when it comes to exploring the city, St. Petersburg boasts amazing architecture, history, as well as art, and is home to many museums and places of interest. Regular visits to the city’s theaters, concerts, museums as well as guided tours are organized by the university. What’s more, is that only a twenty minute walk away from the university’s campus is the elegant architectural ensemble of the Spit of Basil (Vasilyevsky) Island and other famous historical sites of the city. 


Students can live in one of the university’s eight modern halls of residence which accommodate more than 3,000 students. The hostels are located right next to the university buildings with all necessary amenities and facilities included, such as comfortable living spaces, laundry rooms, dining rooms, gyms, computer rooms, as well as security. 

If you’re an international student who’s interested in studying at Saint-Petersburg Mining University, you will be required to submit a number of documents, including: 

  •  Application form
  •  Copy of passport  
  •  2 ID photos (30х40mm) 
  •  A copy of your education document equivalent to the Russian Certificate of Secondary General Education for Bachelor Programs, or the Bakalavr Diploma (Bachelor’s degree)/Specialist Diploma for Master Programs.

Your passport and certificate of secondary education should also be officially translated into Russian and certified by a Notary Public of the Russian Federation.

You will also need to submit either an official score from the Unified State Examination of the Russian Federation or the score from internal entrance exams at the Mining University in the relevant subjects.

Teaching is conducted entirely in Russian, so those who wish to apply to Saint-Petersburg Mining University will need to have proven language efficiency. The university runs pre-university language courses at the Preparatory department for international students where they can study Russia for either one semester or a year.

At Saint-Petersburg Mining University, an impressive 98 percent of graduates receive a job offer or continue their studies at the university after graduating.
