Semey Medical University (former Semipalatinsk Medical Institute) was founded in 1952 and is one of the oldest educational institutions of the Republic of Kazakhstan with a 65-year history. Nowadays, Semey Medical University is the largest higher education institution of the North-Eastern region of Kazakhstan and the main supplier of medical personnel for the East Kazakhstan and Pavlodar regions.

The University provides educational services of higher, postgraduate and additional education. Subjects are taught in the state, Russian and English languages. There are 4880 students.

The form of education is full-time. Clinical skills are mastered at the premises of the Training and Clinical Center, own university hospital and 76 clinical sites.

There are international students at the university also, who are 19% from the total number. The university provides training on 5bachelor's degree programs, 4 master's degree programs, 2 doctoral programs and24 residency programs. The share of accredited educational programs is 88.5%.

The University is the leader among medical universities of Kazakhstan in terms of the level graduates employment. According to the rating of JSC "Center for Human Resources Development", compiled by the order of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection for the period from 2015 to 2018, the University was ranked 14thamong the universities of Kazakhstan and the 1st among medical universities in terms of demand for graduates. In total, over the years of its existence, the university has trained 26,683 specialists who successfully work in Kazakhstan, near and far abroad (Pakistan, India, Palestine, Sudan, Morocco, Jordan, Israel, Syria, Russia, Germany, Canada, etc.).

The university has its own University Hospital (11buildings, total area 22000 m2), branches in Pavlodar and Ust-Kamenogorsk. In2018, Research Institute of Radiation Medicine and Ecology became the part ofSemey Medical University.
