About Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University

Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU), Islamabad, was established by the Act of Parliament on 21 March 2013. The university aims to contribute towards Pakistan's health sector by developing a state-of-the-art academic and research environment. Its vision is the attainment of medical education to internationally recognized standards aimed at excellence and innovation in both teaching and clinical practices. Currently, Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University is the sole federal medical university that has five faculties offering 52 postgraduate and undergraduate programs. Briefly included Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Faculty of Dentistry and Allied Disciplines, Faculty of Medicine and Allied Disciplines, Faculty of Surgery Allied Disciplines and Faculty of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences. The university has several constituent and affiliated colleges and hospitals. Among other constituent hospitals, Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences Islamabad is the constituent hospital of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University. Since 1988, PIMS has remained Pakistan’s premier postgraduate medical center. In March 1990, CPSP also recognized the institute’s programs for postgraduate clinical training amongst others. In 1996, PIMS was declared an attached department of the then-defunct Federal Ministry of Health. In 2004 the Government of Pakistan upgraded PIMS to a postgraduate medical teaching institute. SZABMU has been engaged in several international and national research projects is also licensed for conducting Phase III clinical trials in its state of the art clinical trial unit.   

For growing educational and technical needs of the country, the University is offering structured residency training programs in clinical disciplines that are designed to be equivalent to internationally recognized medical qualifications, such as the FRCP, MRCP, and Diplomat American Boards. Improving the health of the nation through teaching, research, and service; stimulating innovation to develop new creative solutions to address health needs of the Pakistani society; attracting and training highly talented students to become future national and international leaders; and setting standards of excellence among faculty and staff through recruiting, retaining, nurturing, and promoting individuals who represent the finest in the country. To further promote the academic and professional ranks of the leading faculty and staff by mentoring, training, and strategic management of career transitions, through the building of a diverse community of scientists, clinicians, administrators, staff, trainees, and students, while ensuring monitoring, transparency, and accountability. There are 90 postgraduate supervisors at SZABMU catering the needs of all clinical and basic medical domains. In all, the University’s academic programs have an enrollment of over 14000 students since its establishment playing crucial role in catering healthcare needs of Pakistan.
