About Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski"

The University of Sofia (St. Kliment Ohridski) or simply Sofia University,  is the oldest higher education institution in Bulgaria, founded on 1 October 1888. Sofia University has been consistently ranked as the top university in Bulgaria according to national and international rankings, and is constant among the best world universities.

The university has 16 faculties, Burgas branch of Sofia University and three departments, where over 22,000 students receive their education. In addition, it also disposes of a University library, a University press, a Computer centre, a Sports centre, University theater, University botanic gardens,  Centre for Polar Studies with the Antarctic base "St. Kliment Ohridski" on Livingston Island, Antarctica,  "Lozenets" University General Hospital,  Museums, Burgas branch of Sofia University,  INSAIT – Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology, Institute "Big Data for Smart Society" (GATE),  Scientific Research Centre (NIS)   and several other structures. The current rector is  Prof. Georgi Valchev . The Bulgarian system of higher education is open to all applicants who have a diploma for completed secondary education which makes them eligible to study at the universities in the country in which they have completed secondary education.

The system comprises the following three degrees:

FIRST DEGREE – the period of study according to the regular curriculum is four years. The students graduating according to the curriculum are awarded a Bachelor’s degree.

SECOND DEGREE – the period of study according to the regular curriculum is five years or at least one year after completing a Bachelor’s degree programe. The students graduating according to the curriculum are awarded a Master’s degree.

THIRD DEGREE – the period of study is three years after completing a Master’s degree program. The students graduating according to the curriculum are awarded a Doctoral degree.

Students at higher educational institutions can choose full-time, part-time, or distance courses. The Doctoral programs in higher educational institutions and scientific organizations in Republic of Bulgaria are full-time, part-time, distance, and unsupervised on an individual plan.

The full-time and unsupervised individual-plan doctoral programs are three-year programs. Applicants must have a Master’s degree.

Part-time doctoral programs last four years. Applicants must have a Master’s degree. The Doctoral degree study is organized in subject areas.

Sofia University also offers lifelong learning programs for further qualification. The programs for lifelong learning and further qualification do not lead to awarding a new degree, qualification or specialty. A specialist is enrolled on a program with a specialized curriculum and does not receive a further degree, a new qualification or new specialization.

Cost of Living

The cost of living in Bulgaria is lower than the average for Western European countries, which attracts students; on average, a person needs about 767-1023 euros (as of 2024-2025) per month to cover basic needs such as rent and food, but this varies significantly between Sofia (more expensive) and other cities, with low tuition fees and affordability making the country attractive to international students.

• Rent and Housing: The biggest expense, especially in Sofia, where monthly rent for an apartment can range from 400-600 euros (studio/one-bedroom) to 800+ euros, while prices are lower in other cities. Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" has 6300 beds in the dormitories of Studentski grad - Sofia. Monthly rent for international students is 70 euros.

• Food: Affordable, with monthly costs per person around 153-205 euros if you cook at home. Sofia University has restaurants, with a meal costing 2 euros for students. The menu includes three courses of your choice, with several vegetarian dishes and fruit being mandatory.

• Transport: Public transport is cheap. The student card for public transport in Sofia costs – 7.50 euros (monthly card for all lines), 3.50 euros (monthly card for one surface line) and 4.60 euros (monthly metro card).

• Utilities: Relatively low bills for electricity, water, heating (winter may be more expensive), on average 51-77 euros for an apartment.
