The cost of living in Bulgaria is lower than the average for Western European countries, which attracts students; on average, a person needs about 767-1023 euros (as of 2024-2025) per month to cover basic needs such as rent and food, but this varies significantly between Sofia (more expensive) and other cities, with low tuition fees and affordability making the country attractive to international students.
• Rent and Housing: The biggest expense, especially in Sofia, where monthly rent for an apartment can range from 400-600 euros (studio/one-bedroom) to 800+ euros, while prices are lower in other cities. Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" has 6300 beds in the dormitories of Studentski grad - Sofia. Monthly rent for international students is 70 euros.
• Food: Affordable, with monthly costs per person around 153-205 euros if you cook at home. Sofia University has restaurants, with a meal costing 2 euros for students. The menu includes three courses of your choice, with several vegetarian dishes and fruit being mandatory.
• Transport: Public transport is cheap. The student card for public transport in Sofia costs – 7.50 euros (monthly card for all lines), 3.50 euros (monthly card for one surface line) and 4.60 euros (monthly metro card).
• Utilities: Relatively low bills for electricity, water, heating (winter may be more expensive), on average 51-77 euros for an apartment.
