Soran University

Soran University is a public higher education institution in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, officially established at the end of 2009 by decree of the Kurdistan Regional Government. Since its foundation, the University has adopted a forward-looking academic vision focused on the quality of science, institutional reform, and international engagement. By combining local academic strengths with the expertise of international scholars, Soran University has sought to introduce a modern and innovative model of higher education that aligns with global academic standards.

Located in the city of Soran, in a strategic geographic area bordering Iraq, Iran, and Turkey, the University has rapidly developed into a prominent academic center in the region. Over a relatively short period, Soran University has attracted significant national and international attention due to its commitment to academic excellence, educational reform, and research-driven development. Its guiding philosophy, “From Building Humans Towards Building the Nation,” reflects its role in human capital development and societal progress.

Academically, Soran University consists of five faculties: the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Education, and the Faculty of Law, Political Science, and Management. These faculties collectively serve more than 8,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students and are supported by over 780 academic staff members, alongside a strong administrative workforce. The University continuously updates its curricula and teaching methods to respond to scientific advancement, labor market needs, and international quality frameworks, particularly the Bologna Process.

Research and innovation form a central pillar of Soran University’s mission. The Scientific Research Center plays a vital role in supporting interdisciplinary research, promoting innovation, and strengthening cooperation with national and international institutions. Research activities address key regional and global challenges, including climate change and sustainability, petroleum geosciences, environmental studies, social sciences, and applied technologies. Undergraduate (Bachelor’s) Programs

Soran University offers a wide range of undergraduate programs across its five faculties. Bachelor’s programs typically span four academic years and follow the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), ensuring transparency, mobility, and international comparability. Undergraduate education emphasizes strong theoretical foundations, practical skills, and academic integrity, supported by modern teaching technologies and student information systems. Instruction is delivered in Kurdish, Arabic, and English, with a strategic transition toward increased English-medium instruction.

Master’s Programs

At the postgraduate level, Soran University offers structured and research-oriented master’s programs designed to develop advanced academic and professional competencies. Master’s programs are generally completed over two years, combining coursework with a full research-based thesis. These programs prepare graduates for doctoral studies, academic careers, and specialized professional roles, while maintaining rigorous academic supervision and research standards.
