Sumy State University

Sumy State University (SumDU) is a fully comprehensive Ukrainian university with about 50% of private funding sources, high international orientation, and a focus on research. The University holds high positions among Ukrainian higher education institutions for the number of prize-winning places in All-Ukrainian competitions of students’ research works and All-Ukrainian Olympiads in educational disciplines, training areas and majors. The University is a signatory of Magna Charta Universitatum and Talloires Declaration, a reliable member of the International Association of Universities, European University Association, Association of Economic Universities of South and Eastern Europe and the Black Sea Region, Baltic University Programme, IREG Observatory on Academic Ranking and Excellence and other international organizations.

Sumy State University cooperates with more than 300 partners from 55 world countries, including the USA, Great Britain, Germany, Austria, France, Belgium, Sweden, Poland, Lithuania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Japan, South Korea, China and other countries of the world. The University actively develops academic mobility programmes, including long-term and short-term studies, internships, virtual mobility programmes and placement programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate students; professional development, teaching, and research mobility for staff with substantial scholarship and grant support using technologies of credit transfer and recognition of academic results. According to the number of commercial contracts and grants, and the efficiency of using budget funds, Sumy State University is one of the leaders among Ukrainian universities. 40 kinds of sports and about 100 sports groups are available at the University.

Sports teams perform at the premier league level. About 100 students are the record breakers and prize winners of the Olympic Games, World, European and Ukrainian Championships.

The mission of SumDU is to maximize of satisfaction of value expectations of all the categories of the university stakeholders through ensuring an undeniable competitive advantage of services being provided, their adaptivity to the modern world needs which are changing rapidly, and excellence. This, in particular, has to be displayed in: - delivering educational activity at the level that provides preparation of highly educated intellectual elite of the society and implements the thesis “The university is the talents industry”; - ensuring of high requirements of the labour market by the specialists of new formation who are able to work under conditions of rapid-changing, multifunctional environment; - delivering of educational needs of the general population through accessibility to obtaining knowledge and skills, diversity of form of implementation of continuous lifelong learning that is one of the components of the university’s social mission; - generation of new knowledge through the large-scale, multidisciplinary scientific activity; - influence on the socio-economic development of the society through the transfer of the innovative technologies, implementation of the mission of the centre of communication among business, science, education, government; - preparation of scientific and scientific-pedagogical staff with competencies well accepted in the global scientific and educational space; - ensuring the export of educational and scientific services to other countries, in particular to countries of the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) or/and the EU; - simultaneous implementation of corresponding functions of innovative development at the regional, national and global levels; - influence on the society’s mental life, caring attitude to culture, preservation of mental and material values, forming of an integral, moral, nationally conscious human being; - implementation of multifaceted social mission, the function of civil society institution.
