Syracuse University’s Martin J. Whitman School of Management (Whitman School) offers students the best possible learning experience through a combination of established university resources and small class sizes that offer individual attention. The Whitman School was formally the College of Business Administration and was established in 1919. In 1920, it was only the 16th collegiate business school in the US to be accredited by the AACSB. The school launched its MBA programme in 1948. The Whitman School has been a leader in education innovation and began offering a distance MBA in 1977.

University information

Admission to the Whitman School of Management is through a holistic application review process. Candidates admitted to their programmes possess excellent communication skills, intellectual curiosity, and personal discipline. Historically, one of Whitman’s greatest strengths has been the diversity of its student body.

To apply, candidates must prepare a CV or resume, unofficial transcripts, an essay, letters of recommendation, test scores, an essay and an English language exam, though further requirements can vary by programme. 

The MBA admission is highly selective, and applicants who meet the minimum criteria are not automatically admitted. Application overview (see the full MBA application checklist):

- A US bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university - Completed application

- Recommended minimum GPA is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale

- GMAT or GRE exam (though there is a waiver for 2022 students) 

- Recommended minimum GMAT score is 600. The 2021 entering class average was 667.

- Recommended minimum GRE Quant score is 160 and Verbal score is 150. The 2021 entering class average was Quant was 165 and Verbal was 155.

- English exam (for international students) where the minimum total score for TOEFL iBT is 100, IELTS Academic is 7.0 and Duolingo English Test is 120. 

- Work experience is preferred, but not required for admission. 


International student applications are also similar, though require English translations of documentation if applicable and an English proficiency exam for candidates where English is not their first language, however this may be waived in certain situations. International applicants who require an F-1 Student Visa must submit documentation that demonstrates their ability to fund their education for one full academic year.

All students who submit completed applications for admission at Syracuse University are considered for merit scholarships. No separate application is needed. US Citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply for federal financial aid. File the financial aid applications at the same time as the admissions application; do not wait for an admission decision.

The centre of the Whitman School campus is a 160,000-square-foot student-focused facility that, from the ground up, has been designed to deliver nationally prominent programmes in a space that fosters collegiality and community. This includes 22 classrooms, a 200-seat auditorium, 20 team meeting rooms each for graduate and undergraduate students, a three-story, 4,000-square-foot grand hall, computer clusters, a café and more.

The Whitman School campus features:

  • The Ballentine Investment Institute, with sophisticated software that prepares students for financial careers on Wall Street
  • The Kuhn Real Estate Center, which hosts workshops and seminars and is the foundation for the real estate curriculum
  • The Falcone Center, which facilitates entrepreneurial activity on campus and in local and regional communities
  • An integrated space for the school's endowed research centers and institutes

The Whitman School fosters a strong sense of community, with quality spaces for informal interactions and public events. Special study areas for students help build identity and cohesion, while the Ilene and David Flaum Grand Hall, the Milton Room, and comfortable conversation areas throughout the building encourage casual interaction among faculty, students, staff, alumni and visitors.

The Whitman School of Management building also has many sustainable, environmentally conscious features, including:

- Erosion control plans to reduce the impact on water and air quality

- Restored landscape areas with new trees to reduce the impact of rainwater runoff

- Special roofing to reduce thermal gradient difference between developed and undeveloped areas

- Some building materials made with recycled content

- Maximised use of daylight for lighting and heat

- Under-floor ventilation to increase air circulation

Student life

Student life at Whitman School is focused on building connections while having fun. In addition to taking advantage of all that Syracuse University and the neighbouring area has to offer, Whitman students are offered a wide variety of specialised opportunities to gain professional experience. 

Throughout each semester students partake in professional development events including career fairs, workshops, competitions and more. Whitman is home to approximately 17 student clubs and organisations, including Xi Tau, Syracuse University’s award-winning chapter of the Delta Sigma Pi, a national professional co-ed fraternity. Students can meet and network with students and professionals who share their business and entrepreneurial interests. 

To promote student’s well-being, there is a variety of exercise facilities and the campus has gone tobacco free. As well as three athletic facilities, there are two full-length swimming pools, aerobic classes and dance studios. Students can also participate in more than 20 different sports offered during both semesters. 

As part of Syracuse University, Whitman School has 21 residence halls with accommodation to meet diverse needs. In fact, approximately 70 percent of students live on campus. 

To support students and alumni, there is the Whitman Career Center. The mission of the Whitman Career Center is to build mutually beneficial partnerships with faculty, alumni and corporate partners to provide innovative programming and coaching that will empower students to reach their career aspirations with integrity and professionalism, preparing them for personal and professional success in an ever-changing global business environment. 

Their career services offer a dedicated student career advisor, who will begin to work with new students prior to arrival on campus through the Summer Online Onboarding Program. So far, they have found that the implementation of one-to-one counselling has positively impacted the master’s programmes placement numbers.

Full-time MBA

Their STEM-designated full-time MBA is a 54-credit-hour programme with 36 core course credits and 18 elective credits completed over a span of two years. Students can specialise in up to two of seven concentrations.

Further, students can customise their curriculum by adding electives either at Whitman or another school or college within Syracuse University. Whitman’s MBA programme aims to develop students critical thinking skills for solving complex business scenarios. In addition, their MBA students also have the opportunity study abroad with a global residency course.

The programme fee is the standard graduate tuition rate for the 2022-2023 academic year, which is US$1,802 per credit hour. The estimated total tuition cost for the 2022-2023 academic year is USD $32,436 for domestic students and USD $58,440 for international students, though there are further costs such as accommodation to keep in mind.
