Thamar University is a government university and was established on August 24, 1996. It is located in the city of Dhamar, Yemen. It was established to provide scientific research and community services at the local, regional, and international levels. The number of students enrolled at the University exceeds twenty thousand. The University comprises many faculties with various specialties and fields of study. The origins of Thamar University trace back to 1990 when the Faculty of Education was established in Dhamar as a teaching center affiliated with Sana'a University. This center offered programs in English, Arabic, History, Geography, Islamic Studies, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics. In 1996, Republican Decree No. 150 for 1996 was signed by President Ali Abdullah Saleh to establish Thamar University. In 1996, the faculties of Arts and Language, Applied Science, Agriculture, and Veterinary Science were opened, followed by the faculties of Administrative Sciences, Computer and Information Technology, and Dental Faculty in 1997. Then, two faculties were founded in 1998: Medicine and Engineering & Dams. The same year, the Faculty of Education in Al Bayda'a was established. The continuing education institute (two-year study) was established in 2004. Faculties in both Al Bayda'a and Rada'a were separated from Thamar University in 2009 and became an independent university in Al Bayda'a. Thamar University is the alma mater of over 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students, drawn from nearly all the governorates of Yemen. Several students are from abroad. At the University, there are more than 1,000 academic members on the faculty. Also, Thamar University currently has 13 faculties, 7 scientific centers, and 10 peer-reviewed journals.
