The Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción (UCSC) was founded on July 10th, 1991, by ordinance of the Bishop of the Archdiocese of the Santísima Concepción, Monsignor Antonio Moreno Casamitjana. We are an institution of Higher Education of the Catholic Church, member of the Chilean Universities Rectors' Council, accredited by the National Accreditation Commission. With a public vocation and strong ethical and social character, our University was founded in 1991 as a continuation of the work that the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile developed in the city of Talcahuano in the early 1970s.
The UCSC is located in the Biobio Region, which is approximately 500 kilometers south of Santiago. It is the second most important Region in the country regarding population, as well as industrial and productive development. UCSC has two university campuses in the city of Concepción, while its Technological Institute has branches in the three provinces of the Biobio Region, as well as in the province of the Ñuble Region. With its research activities and teaching, UCSC responds to the local and national reality.
The UCSC community is over 15,000 strong, including students, faculty, and administrative staff. It have seven faculties (Law, Science, Education, Engineering, Medicine, Business Management, and Communication, History, and Social Sciences) an Institute of Theology, and a Technological Institute.
The Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción is an institution of higher education with a Christian vision, dedicated to comprehensive training, as well as knowledge generation and transfer, in permanent connection with its environment in order to contribute to the development of the local and national community.
The professional and technical training provided by UCSC responds to meeting the productive and development needs of the Biobio Region and the country. The seven Faculties, the Institute of Theology and the Technological Institute that form the University offer undergraduate teaching in eight disciplinary areas: Natural Sciences, Education, Humanities, Social Science, Health Sciences, Law, Administration and Business, Technical formation and Engineering.
UCSC offers several postgraduate programs in different fields of study. Their purpose is to offer continuing education to professionals, as well as contribute to the development of research.
Research at UCSC is preferably developed though a multidisciplinary approach, aiming to respond to the different problems that our society presents. The University has defined priority areas for research, and for this purpose, it has crated specialized advanced centres that contribute decisively to the generation of knowledge: Center for Research on Biodiversity and Sustainable Environments (Centro de Investigación en Biodiversidad y Ambientes Sustentables - CIBAS) and Center for Research in Education and Development (Centro de Investigación en Educación y Desarrollo - CIEDE).
UCSC maintains a close relationship with the various actors in our society, through the permanent interaction that favours the mutual feedback of knowledge and experiences. The University has academic exchange agreements with institutions in over 65 countries around the world.
